I know it's a little late, but this process solved the "brick on update" issue for my wife's iPhone with the last 2 updates. Windows doesn't seem to like the Bonjour service that Apple bundles with iTunes.
1. Close iTunes.
2. Ctrl + Alt + Del - Brings up the windows task manager. Find and "end" the Bonjour.exe process.
3. Click Start >> Run >> type in devmgmt.msc and click "OK"
4. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers; if there's nothing under it, click the plus sign (+) next to it.
5. Right click on any listings that mention Mac, iPhone, or iTunes and select "Uninstall".
6. If your iPhone is still connected, disconnect it, wait a few seconds, then reconnect. Windows should discover it, and add the driver.
7. Launch iTunes and do the recover and update.
