Q: Buying iPod Now or later

by jakestarnes - 8/14/08 12:03 PM

Should i buy an iPod now or wait for the next rev?

A: Wait

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 12:05 PM

Might as well wait for another month or so, as I expect Apple to make iPod-related announcements in Sept/Oct. Then, you can always get a good deal on an older gen product.

Q: Bluetooth Headphones

by gregoryglambert - 8/14/08 11:29 AM

I have been waiting for some good bluetooth headphones to come out - strictly for music on ipod and computer. Seems like there have been complaints about the older models by motorola and logitech and have not been many new models lately. Should I go ahead and get some now or wait for newer models? Is there a model now that you definitely recommend above others? Thanks!!!

A: Not really

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:50 AM

Bluetooth headphones have not become so good that I want to trade out my own wired headphones for a pair, and it does seem as though ones made specifically for music (rather than cell phones with music as an "extra") have been languishing. The Etymotic Ety8s seem to be the best option: http://reviews.cnet.com/4505-7877_7-32180001.html

I'm waiting for Open Interface to make more headway: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9753434-1.html?tag=blog.6. Especially since they were acquired by Qualcomm.

Q: just a comment on iPod Touch pricing

by ktreb - 8/14/08 11:37 AM

This isn't a question. I just wanted to comment on redeem4god's question regarding iPod Touch pricing. He/she needs to keep in mind that while the iPhone seems less expensive, you must committ to a 2 year contract. So, you're looking at another $2000 over the life of the contract. But at least you get a phone.

That said, I'm hoping for a higher capacity Touch at lower price points.

A: True

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:40 AM

Important to keep in mind that AT&T is subsidizing the iPhone, which is why the price is as low as it is.

Q: Ipod touch price drops?

by redeem4god - 8/14/08 11:29 AM

I am aching for to purchase and ipod touch but the price is still a little rich.

Now that the 3G Iphone has been release with a lower price, are there any confirmed reports of apple dropping the price on the touch?

It simply doesn't make sense to have a unit with less built in technology at a higher price.

A: My suspicion

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:31 AM

Apple usually makes iPod-related announcements in September or October, which isn't too far off. I suspect that one of the announcements will be a price drop (hopefully significant) on the iPod Touch. Hold out a bit longer!

Q: bluetooth headsets

by areaman714 - 8/14/08 11:25 AM

hi jasmine . . .

can you recommend any decent bluetooth headsets? . . . the one's i've seen appear less than remarkable . . . advise to wait is an acceptable answer . . .

A: Portable wireless

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:28 AM

We've reviewed a fair array of stereo Bluetooth headsets and there are several decent pairs. I would say the audio quality for music is still not up to wired quality, so if that's what you're after, best to wait.

Otherwise, hit up this list: http://reviews.cnet.com/best-portable-wireless-headphones/?tag=lnav

Q: Bluetooth earpiece

by rootsmusic - 8/14/08 11:23 AM

Are there any Bluetooth cellular earpiece that can also transmit FM radio frequencies (directly or indirectly)?

A: Interesting concept

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:26 AM

Do you mean like act as an FM transmitter and push music to your car stereo? Or an FM receiver that can pick up broadcast stations? Either way, I have never heard of such a thing existing.

Q: Denon D5000

by mhybers - 8/14/08 11:23 AM

Will you be able to do a review on these headphones soon?

A: Hopefully on CNET

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:24 AM

Those would probably be handled by our team in New York (home entertainment), but they look cush. I certainly wouldn't mind getting my hands/head on them.

Q: good quality wireless headphones

by redeem4god - 8/14/08 11:18 AM

I saw a movie (definately, maybe) where the lead actor placed some small ear bud headphones in his ears while walking the streets of New York. The cook thing was that these ear buds had no wires.

Do we chalk it up to mere hollywood affects or is there such a thing as wireless earbud headphones. I do know that wireless bluetooth exists with an ala Sony style headband type but the earbud kind rocks.

A: Etymotic Ety8 and others

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:28 AM

They exist, but they're not exactly small enough (yet) to completely disappear into the ear.

Q: New Headphones?

by crod60 - 8/14/08 11:17 AM

I have been using ETY 4s earbud for abt 5 years. They have been excellent. Has the technolgy changes sufficiently that I should think of an upgrade? If so, what would be a good in ear set with noise cancelling. I log abt 150K miles in a plane and use an iphone 3g for movies and music. Is a headphone amp worth the $?

A: No need for an upgrade now

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:21 AM

You might find this of some interest: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-6490_7-10014325-49.html

I think that if those are still working great for you, there's no reason to replace them. Chances are, they may start to fizzle soon, and then you can start shopping. For the in-ear variety, are you set on active noise-canceling, or will passive noise-isolation do?

Q: How about a specific set for gaming?

by CliffnMichelle - 8/14/08 11:09 AM

For PC gaming with 3D audio, do you suggest dedicated phones that produce their own multichannel/3D audio, or do you suggest a sound card that produces the effect over stereo headphones?

A: Gaming headphones

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:19 AM

I don't get my hands on many gaming headphones, since they are handled by our home entertainment editors, but I would start at the sound card. Then, if you can, test out a variety of full-size cans and see which ones you like the best--personal taste has a lot to do with it.

Q: Sennheiser HD650 or AKG K 701?

by Lantern42 - 8/14/08 11:02 AM

Between the two, which one would you recommend?

I've listened to both, and I'm leaning toward the AKG. But from what I've read, the HD 650's seem to be the standard.

A: Without having used either...

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:17 AM

...I would go with the AKG because I dig the style. Plus, the user reviews are phenomenal, and I believe user reviews can be a great indicator for headphones.

Q: Inexpensive in-ear head phones.

by Allaniceman - 8/14/08 11:11 AM

Hi Jasmine,

In a recent podcast you mentioned that the standard ipod headphones were not all that great and people were missing out. Can you suggest an inexpensive(less than $100) in-ear alternative.

Thanks,
Allan

A: I can suggest several!

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:16 AM

This feature is a little dated, but still has several great sets listed: http://reviews.cnet.com/4321-6468_7-6547989.html?tag=feat.5

You can even find decent 'buds for under $50: http://reviews.cnet.com/4321-7877_7-6606890.html?tag=feat.6

Q: What is a good headphone for the price?

by smilepak - 8/14/08 11:10 AM

I've gone through the low end Shure, B&O, Bose Plugs, and several others.

I am still in look for that good headphone that able to maintain deep bass and being crisp at the same time w/o having to spend above 200.00 bucks for.

What do you recommend?

A: How about $150?

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:14 AM

It can be tough to find that balance. I've heard a lot of positive feedback about the UE Super.fi 5 EB: http://www.cnet.com/headphones/ultimate-ears-super-fi/4505-7877_7-31445053.html?tag=prod.txt.1

Q: Any tips for determining ear buds fit?

by pdxstoney - 8/14/08 11:10 AM

One thing I hate about ear buds is you really can't test fit them before you buy them. I'll take a comfortable pair over a good sounding pair any day of the week. Depsite the fact I have a fat head, my ear canal is relatively small. Is there anything I can look for when picking out a ear buds?

A: Foam eartips

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:12 AM

I totally feel your pain. It's always good to purchase from some place with a good return policy. Another thing I always look for are foam eartips included in the package. These tend to conform nicely to small ear shapes and seal up well.

Q: Bang & Olufsen

by awesomelife - 8/14/08 11:06 AM

What's your review about the ear phones from Bang & Olufsen?

A: Awesome

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:10 AM

I haven't reviewed any B&O headphones as a standalone product, but they included a pair with one of their MP3 players that I reviewed way back and they were fantastic. Excellent sound quality.

Q: Headphones in the shower

by Ryan415 - 8/14/08 11:08 AM

Hi Jasmine

My question is - Can you reccomend headphones to use while showering?

A: Waterproof headphones

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:09 AM

They exist, but I wouldn't really recommend them. They tend to not be very good.

http://www.cnet.com/headphones/h2o-audio-headphones/4505-7877_7-31943499.html?tag=prod.txt.3

Try a portable speaker outside the shower instead!

Q: Second comment yeah!

by G-hero47 - 8/14/08 11:03 AM

What is the best headphones ever, regardless of price?

A: Oh man...

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:08 AM

...that is such a loaded question! It really depends on the features and design your after. Full-size? Noise-canceling? In-ear? It's super subjective. I'm in love with the Philips SHE-9850 right now, but if Shure made the earpieces of the SE530s smaller, that would be my top choice.

Q: Zen X-Fi

by redeem4god - 8/14/08 11:03 AM

I could have missed this but in regards to The new Zens Wi-Fi support are we looking at a restricted connection for select applications, or is there an actual browser?

Will it suffer from Archo's ailment of charging the consumer extra to download the brower or come pre-installed like Apple?

A: No browser at this time

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:06 AM

The Zen X-Fi's WiFi capability is fairly limited at this time. You can chat or access a music/content server that you've set up, and that's about it. However, there are plans for future apps, and a browser may be one.

Q: Great all purpose wireless phones?

by CliffnMichelle - 8/14/08 11:01 AM

Can you suggest something of an all purpose wireless solution, something for all Home Theater, Gaming, computer and portable applications, keeping in mind that I can not stand ear buds, and I don't want a massive set of cans either?

A: How about portable?

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:04 AM

Generally, I don't think portable wireless headphones are going to cut the mustard for gaming and home theater, but if size matters, check out the list here: http://reviews.cnet.com/best-portable-wireless-headphones/?tag=lnav

Q: ipod touch sound quality

by rudster11 - 8/14/08 11:00 AM

Hi Jasmine,

Is iPod Touch sound quality really that bad? I am thinking of getting one but can't decide whether to get iPod Touch or Samsung P2

Thx
Rudy

A: No, not at all

by Jasmineflower - 8/14/08 11:02 AM

Actually, the iPod Touch's sound quality is quite good. Donald Bell compared it head-to-head with the iPhone and the Touch was noticeably better. The P2 sounds phenomenal, though - that's a tough call!

A: (NT) Bring it on!

Bluetooth Headsets with A2DP
I recently got an LG Voyager, and found your reviews right on.

Howver, the Voyager won't support a Bluetooth headset for music and TV unless it has A2DP capability.

I bought a Jabra BT8040 and it worked fine, but I couldn't get it to fit my ear (it doesn't have an over-the-ear support) and am trying to find a single ear headset which does support A2DP.

CNET reviews, however, don't make it clear if a headset supports or does not support A2DP. Do you know of any other single earpiece headsets which do support it?

Headphone adapter for LG phone music player!
I bought a 3.5mm to 2.5mm headphone jack adapter so that I could use my regulary 3.5mm headphones with my LG phone to listen to music. However the sound only comes out of one ear! I bought two adapters - same problem with both. I know the 3.5mm headphones work fine with stereo on other plays, so what do you think the problem is? Thanks so much.

iPhone w/o contract
commenting on redeem4god again:

Of course, Apple isn't getting the $2000. But they're getting more than $299/$399.

I got this from AT&T's iPhone 3G website:

"In the future, AT&T may offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB."

They aren't offering it yet and when they do it will be more than $100 over contract pricing.

Ipod touch price drops @ Ktrep
That $2000 over the life of the contract is paid to AT&T not to apple for the purchase of the phone. You're talking about two different consumer consumables.

Wireless plans were irrelevant in my question for head to head technology price points.

However, that said I did double back and catch myself because Apple does offer the purchase of the Iphone WITHOUT a contract now and if memory serves me it actually will cost $100 more then if you get it with a plan.

So that negates my question.

Zen X-Fi
I could have missed this but in regards to The new Zens Wi-Fi support are we looking at a restricted connection for select applications, or is there an actual browser?

Will it suffer from Archo's ailment of charging the consumer extra to download the brower or come pre-installed like Apple?

Sennheiser HD650 or AKG K 701?
Between the two, which one would you recommend?

I've listened to both, and I'm leaning toward the AKG. But from what I've read, the HD 650's seem to be the standard.

Great all purpose wireless phones?
Can you suggest something of an all purpose wireless solution, something for all Home Theater, Gaming, computer and portable applications, keeping in mind that I can not stand ear buds, and I don't want a massive set of cans either?

Hi Jasmine,

Is iPod Touch sound quality really that bad? I am thinking of getting one but can't decide whether to get iPod Touch or Samsung P2

Thx
