Where did the BOL title come from?

by DaveBinM - 8/13/08 10:51 PM

I was looking in Podcast Central the other day, and was wondering where Buzz Out Loud got its title from. Most of the podcasts have obvious origins for their name, but not BOL. For example: Car Tech, Indecent Exposure, Mailbag, Today In Tech History, Dialed In, Gadgettes, etc. Most of those names are fairly self explanatory, but does anyone know how Buzz Out Loud got its name? I can't see an obvious answer like the others.

I believe...

The title stems from a column that Molly used to do called The Daily Buzz. I'm not sure if The Buzz Report came next, then Buzz Out Loud.

Which reminds me...

Quite awhile ago, I suggested this forum be called the "Buzz Out Lounge", vs. the "Buzz Out Loud Lounge". Buzz Out Lounge keeps the BOL initials, and rolls off the tongue easier.

It's funny because

I was thinking the same thing. It's kinda like the Four oh Forum (for The 404 podcast). I think it's cute.

yeap, the Daily Buzz

I also think that's where it came from. By the way, I enjoyed Molly's Daily Buzz short columns a lot.

Okay, so

did The Daily Buzz cover similar sorts of things? I couldn't really find an "origin story" for BOL on the forums, BOL Wiki, or Wikipedia.

it's been a long time

I think Molly stopped doing the column over 2 years ago. I remember stumbling on it when I first started listening to the podcast almost 2 1/2 years ago and it was already outdated. The only reference I see to it now is on the show page on the right hand side where it says "Meet the Hosts." Right by her picture is a little blurb that states:

"Molly Wood engages in ruthless industry analysis in the form of the Daily Buzz, the Buzz Report video, and, of course, Buzz Out Loud."

there is something up with the forums

So this may be a duplicate posting. My original post seems to have disappeared.

Anyway, it's been a long time since Molly has done the column. It's been a least 2 1/2 years. I stumbled on it when I first started listening to the podcast at about that time and it was already outdated. The only reference I could find was on the BOL show page where it says "Meet the Buzz Out Loud Hosts." Next to Molly's picture is a blurb that says:

"Molly Wood engages in ruthless industry analysis in the form of the Daily Buzz, the Buzz Report video, and, of course, Buzz Out Loud."

Short and I hope mostly accurate history

Annette Cardwell used to do a feature on the front page of CNET called Daily Buzz. It was three links to buzz-worthy tech stories from around the Internet. When Molly came back to CNET in July 2004, she took over the Daily Buzz from Annette. In addition to the Daily Buzz, Molly also took over a feature called the Buzz Report. It was a look at hot search terms from the CNET search engine.

In early 2005, Molly took over the AnchorDesk franchise from Brian Cooley and Buzz Report was changed to become a regular opinion column written by Molly. She continued to write the Daily Buzz on the front door as well. Also in early 2005, the Buzz Report video was created. The idea was to do a video version of the Daily Buzz feature, looking at a few hot stories in tech for the week.

Around the same time several people including myself, James Kim, Molly, our bosses, and a few others got together to talk about podcasting which was fairly new. We decided to do an audio version of the Buzz Report, but since there would be no video I volunteered to co-host so Molly wouldn't have to carry the whole show off by herself. The original show was to be about 5-10 minutes with quick quips about tech stories of the day. To distinguish it from the video Buzz Report, and emphasize the audio nature of it, we called it Buzz Out Loud. I wish I could remember who coined that, but I know it wasn't me. I feel like maybe it was Molly or the head of video, Mark Larkin.

Eventually the Daily Buzz was removed from the front door of CNET. Molly wrote her last Buzz Report column in 2007.

It's kinda something.....

by Magishine - 8/16/08 11:00 PM In reply to: Short and I hope mostly accurate history by acedtect CNET staff

...to listen to the first couple of shows and hear how the show has evolved from 5-10 minutes to around half an hour or longer.

I believe BOL was one of the first notable tech podcasts. I'm glad it's lasted for so long.

Nice to hear how the name came to be. Now, to load it into the BOL WIki.
