Abort Windows XP Professional Install

by ultimatewd - 8/11/08 3:29 PM

I am trying to install Windows XP Professional on a used laptop with no operating system. My legal copy is giving me the error message: The Product ID you entered is not valid... so I purchased another OS - Windows XP Home, how do I start over so I can install this OS???

Thanks!

Boot from the CD. . .

Since I haven't installed XP in a while, these are general. After you boot you need to format the hard drive and choose one partition. Choose to install XP. This will remove all instances of previous systems. Follow the prompts and when asked, enter the key. You'll need to be on line (broadband) or set to dial up so XP can validate.

Booting from the CD

This isn't working... it starts to install from where it left off. I wish I was more technically savvy! I just want it to forget about my previous attempt and let me try with the new disk... I can't figure out how to start over/abort the current install. FRUSTRATING! If I boot without the disk, then it just asks for it. I can't get past it asking for a different product key... which I don't understand, because I am using the correct key with a legitimate copy.

Did you format the drive?

Unless you format, you'll be stuck in the previous install.

See picture 5? Read "This example already has a partition defined. I will choose not to use this and create a new one by pressing D."?

Seems easy enough.
