Need some help with receiver and speakers.

by zero3son - 8/9/08 8:01 PM

Hi everyone! Currently, I have an old Kenwood speakers (LS-V220W, 8 Ohms, 140 watts), a pair of Bose 101MM (6 ohms, 150 watts peak, a pair of old Yamaha speakers (150 watts, 6 ohms), a Yamaha center speaker (100 watts, 6 ohms) and a Denon subwoofer DSW-55XG (200 watts peak). As you can see my Kenwood speakers is the only one with 8 ohms resistance and the rest are 6 ohms. I am trying to decide which receiver should I buy. I am choosing between Onkyo TX-SR606 silver and Denon AVR-1909. Onkyo's receiver ( 110 watts for 6 ohms, 90 watts for 8 ohms and Denon's 120 watts for 6 ohms, 90 watts for 8 ohms). Will either one of these receivers will be able to handle my Kenwood speakers? I am leaning on Onkyo but Denon is a tempting offer. Will 90 watts be able to power a 140 watts speaker? I need some opinions regarding this matter. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

6 ohms is close enough that you needn't worry. It will work

Onkyo has made many new friends in the past couple of years for offering up to date HDMI & lots of other features for new levels of value.

I have & feel fine about Denon. It runs a bit more money, but they built their reputation for rock solid products over the prior decade. C/NET rates Denon a tad higher than the Onkyo they basically also like quite well. C/NETrates the Denon a bit higher for both sound quality & reliability.

You probably won't find as deep a discount on Denon than you will for Onkyo. Since model year changeover just happened in July, you may find a great, almost 50% off deal on either as a closeout. I've gotten half of my Denon receivers & disk players that way. So hurry into an independent Denon dealer & ask about closeouts.

You are probably fond of your collection of speakers. Frankly they are a mish-mash & you may get new speaker buying fever someday.

Don't get concerned about stated speaker power handling maximum capacities. 90 watts per channel is plenty enough power for typical users.

You won't be going wrong with either Onkyo or Denon receivers. Onkyo is even a little more user
friendly than Denon for ease of setup.

Always go Dennon

In my opinion Onkyo recievers are kinda cheap, (is it any wonder that there is always a surplus of refurbished Onkyos) and i know im gonna get bashed by some hardcore Onkyo fans but so what. Also you may want to get the same speakers for your surround sound rather than haveing a mix of speakers for proper Timbre.

Denon

Yeah,I once read from a forum(not this one) that Onkyo SR606 has some issues on PS3 with some humming sound. They stated that the issue was not addressed from the previous SR605. After thinking for a while I think I'm gonna go for Denon. A little bit pricey but it's worth it.
