Reinstall

by cmjx30 - 12/1/07 9:23 AM In reply to: Help please Grif, none of this solved my same issue by csherman1

Well after trying many things I also came to the conclusion that I also needed to reinstall the whole operating system. The biggest problem was that my backup didnt' work. I'm not sure if it was the worm/virus or my dvd burner was bad - but I did lose things. I don't keep a lot on and most of our family pictures are backed up on Shutterfly - so it was not a complete loss. But it was very frustrating. So I'm pretty much starting from scratch. But I'm not sure there was anything else that could have been done. Sorry to anyone who gets this. It's not fun at all. And if you do reinstall - take my advice - make sure your backup disks work on an unifected computer before you reinstall the operating system. Good luck.

And When It Gets Real Bad...HijackThis...

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 12/6/07 6:46 PM In reply to: Help please Grif, none of this solved my same issue by csherman1

..is the program that generally allows you to clean everything up.. See the link below, download HijackThis, run a scan and save a log.. When you've got the HJT log saved, then visit one of the specialized forums mentioned in the link and post your log there.. We DO NOT interpret HJT logs here:

Hope this helps.

Removing SmitfraudFix icon

by steckona - 7/2/08 12:07 AM In reply to: And When You're Ready To Remove SmitFraudFix... by Grif Thomas Moderator

SmitfraudFix worked well except I can not delete the icon from my desktop. I simply drag the icon to the recycle bin but it says I can not delete it because "it is being used by another person or program". I deleted all the items in the folder and still I can not get rid of the icon and the same statement shows up. Please help.

And one more thing... it's bothering me now that I can not click on any picture and make it take up the whole back of my computer as a wallpaper. Now, when I click on a picture and set it as background it will show up on my desktop as the same size it was on the webpage. I used to be able to click on photos and it would apply them to my whole screen.

Thank-you again!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your directions on removing the Windows security alert pop-ups. I was this close to putting my foot through my computer screen because of the constant pop-ups, but your advice removed that pesky bugger!

Tried This Yet?

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 7/8/08 7:29 PM In reply to: GGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!>_< by soulreaper721

First, download the tool below to your desktop using the links supplied.

1. Smitfraudfix
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

2. SuperAntispyware Removal Tool
http://www.superantispyware.com/

Now install SuperAntispyware, then update it.....

After that's done, then restart the computer into Safe Mode.. While in Safe Mode, run the SmitFraudFix tool per the instructions in the link I supplied above. When it asks to reboot the computer, do so and let Smitfraudfix finish.. Once that's done, then restart into Safe Mode again and run a full system scan using SuperAntispyware.

Hope this helps.

It worked!!

by L0rd_Aryan - 7/13/08 5:29 AM In reply to: Tried This Yet? by Grif Thomas Moderator

I never reply to say thanx in forums, but, this sunday my PC got infected with Antivirus 2008 Pro, and it infected my explorer.exe, first 2 drives were gone(unless manually typed C: in address bar), taskmgr was gone, all in all got infected by a spyware/malware, so, obviously first thing I did was googled it, and found some tools which wasted most of my sunday (don't use "spyware doctor", it sux, no let me rephrase it, it REALLY SUX...), then, I again googled the same thing and saw a search result of answers.yahoo.com, where 1 reply was hving the link of this thread, i visited here and tried SmitFraudFix, it worked. So, thanx "Grif" and "S!Ri" for the same...

Smitfraudfix works but further virus'

by aL_350 - 8/10/08 7:09 PM In reply to: Tried SmitFraudFix Yet? by Grif Thomas Moderator

Thanks Grif, a great post! This was the first time a virus got through, and thanks to you your info I've mostly got rid of it and have now registered for CNET forums.

After running smitfraud, I still get the windowsXP security center fake warning pop-up, so after running some spyware products: SUPERantispyware found trojan.DNS.Changer-codec and more importantly, Symantec AV (Corporte edition I get for free from my job) finds the IEDefender virus in the smitfraud directory, but cant take action (leaves it alone) can smitfraud be a cause?

anyone been able to finally get rid of these?

thanks,

aL

Finally cleaned it all

by aL_350 - 8/14/08 5:03 PM In reply to: Smitfraudfix works but further virus' by aL_350

Hi All,

I used all the instructions in this post, but still had a "Windows security alert" pop-up, I finally got rid of it by running the online Windows Onecare...yes it actually found trojan/win32 which wasn't cleaned by any of the above programs, so try that. Since then everything is working just fine.

thanks to all on this post for your help.

Use of SmitFraudFix

by mandamon - 12/7/08 10:57 PM In reply to: Tried SmitFraudFix Yet? by Grif Thomas Moderator

Hi Grif
I'm having problems with the Antivirus 2009, which I understand is a rogue program. I've downloard SmitFraudfix - which seems to be a popular 'cure' for the malware. I'm not a computer techie. But I've managed to install and run the program. But after over 48 hours, it seems to be still scanning. Please advise on how long it's supposed to take to do the clean up.

Thanks, mandamon

windows security alert

by rickpnc - 7/25/08 6:09 PM In reply to: "Windows Security Alert" Vicious spyware invasion by HHank

I tried for days to get rid of it. I downloaded AVG ver. 8 anti-virus software and this program got rid of it. It is a large file of 46 mb.
It also took about two hours for the full scan but it was worth it.

Fake Alerts and "Windows Security Alert"

by NSXV70 - 8/3/08 7:51 AM In reply to: I keep getting a Pop Up saying "Windows Security Alert" by sshaver

I kept getting a lot of pop up fake alerts on my computer too. What I did was download security software. I have AT&T Fast Access DSL so I got AT&T Internet Security Suite free. You can also get McAfee, Norton, etc. I also downloaded the free version of Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware 2008.

I usually first run AT&T security suite, followed by Adaware and then SpyBot search and destroy in that order. The important thing is to make sure when you do a scan for spyware that you do it in "Safe Mode." Restart your computer and while it is re-starting, tap the "F8" key. This will put your computer in safe mode. It will give you a list of options to choose from once your computer starts back up so be sure to choose "safe mode without networking." The reason you do this is so while you are running your scan, nothing can connect to the Internet. You'll be surprised at how much spyware you will find. You can delete all the spyware you found while you are in safe mode. When you are finished, re-start your computer. I usually run a scan every week at the least. I hope this helps.
