Thought I Uninstalled Windows IM, but PC Now Screwed Up

by Jordan Skylar - 8/11/08 12:09 PM

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 running Windows XP SP2.

I have IM installed, but don't use it. I'm signing up for an online job site and have to install IM using my real name. When the job site tries to install IM, the system stalls. So, I decided to delete my current IM and install it again.

I went to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs, but IM wasn't listed. To the left, there was a link to "Add/Remove Windows Components", so I clicked on that.

I got a screen called "Windows Components Wizard", which showed a list of components you could add/remove. I found Windows Messager, checked that check box only, and clicked on Next. It seemed the wizard did more than delete Windows Messager, but I cannot tell you what it did because it never displayed any messages.

I booted my PC this morning and have many changes! I don't like any of them!

1. My Outlook 2003 doesn't just display my mail. It has several tabs and MS Help is useless. I've always displayed my mail as the default and made sure that all new messages were NOT automatically opened and displayed.

2. There are 3 missing icons on my toolbar: Start IE, go to Desktop, and (I can't remember the 3rd).

3. I no longer have WordPad installed, which I need because I have to reinstall Word again and haven't had the time.

4. I have no way to start IE (IE 6). It is no longer on my toolbar and not in Start -> All Programs. Fortunately, I have 2 links to 2 web sites on my Desktop.

5. I wonder what else is different. I haven't checked anymore.

What did I screw up and how can I fix it? I have a feeling this is not going to be simple.

Thanks for all of your help,
Jordan

Seems All My Mail is GONE! Problem Related to Above Problem

by Jordan Skylar - 8/11/08 12:14 PM In reply to: Thought I Uninstalled Windows IM, but PC Now Screwed Up by Jordan Skylar

I did open Outlook 2003, but it looks like I have no e-mails whatsoever. No Folders at all, such as Inbox, Delete, Sent, Draft, and my personal ones.

OMG! What have I done! This is not funny.

Do you keep backups?

Reading http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ol2003+backup&btnG=Google+Search we see that it's very easy to safeguard our Outlook 2003 content.

At this point I'd be guessing but it looks to me that your Windows "profile" has been corrupted. When I encounter this I make a new user and help the owner migrate to the new account.

For Ol2003's content we restore from backups or go hunting for the old .PST files.

Yes, I Have Backups

by Jordan Skylar - 8/11/08 1:25 PM In reply to: Do you keep backups? by R. Proffitt Moderator

I use Mozy.Com to do daily backups. I just checked what I could restore from Saturday. There are 2 Backup Set categories:

1. Email and Contacts (Outlook) - this has only 2 files; Outlook.pst and archive.pst. These are in folder C:\Documents and Settings\ECE\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

2. Email and Contacts (Outlook Express) - this has 159 files

I have no idea why I have an Outlook and an Outlook Express. Properties says I have Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (11.8169.8172) SP3.

I assume I'd restore the 159 files, which are really my folders.

So, do I still need a new user account for Outlook? Or can I simply restore the files from Mozy?

NOTE: I noticed that my Address Book is empty also.

What do I do about this @)(&$^# Windows "profile" that has been corrupted? Can I fix it, and if so, will it correct the changes I have?

Was this all caused by that IM removal attempt?

Sorry for so many questions. Maybe we should take 1 step at a time? I I am so upset about this.

Thanks,
Jordan

Microsoft writes about profiles.

In English this is your Windows Accounts or "Users." Microsoft does not support or offer any profile repair tools not do they tell us why this happens.
