For all of its faults, iTunes is still the best apps I've found for organizing music. It seems like every other product on the market doesn't care about the last time you listened to a song, if ever. With 11,000+ songs I need this.
...I mean, practically every new phone that's not free to buy can play music from your PC, what with Stereo Bluetooth and all, it kind of gets rid of the wires and stuff. But, just in case you need music when you are out, there is no shortage of cheap MP3 players out there to buy at WAL*MART. Kind of like Korean cars. And they all have their own styles and designs, some more impressive than the iPod. Probably the reason for the iPod's popularity was that then it was cool to be different and have an Apple device. Everyone hated Microsoft then. Not like that's changed...
The fact is your instincts are pretty good, judging by the questions you raised. There are plenty of units as good or better than the iPod. People like to think they're somehow bucking the system by purchasing Apple products. While Apple may have been the anti-company for the first few years of its existence, it's just another big company now. Personally, I prefer Creative products for the best bang for the buck.
I owned an ipod nano back in the first generation. At that point I wanted an ipod so bad. It was a good purchase, don't get me wrong, but in this day and age, I don't see the point in spending so much money for less.
I can understand with computers somewhat. You usually get what you pay for. With the Ipod though, I can't justify spending an extra $100 just for the Apple name apparently.
My sister was thinking of buying an iPod and she asked my advice. On play.com a 2GB (all she needs) Zen cost the same as a 1GB iPod so I told her to get the Zen.
So comparing those two models together.
iPod: No display, 1 GB, dearer
Zen: Display, 2 GB, cheaper
Putting what I feel in a nice way: get lost Apple.
I started with the Creative Zen -- liked that it came with FM radio built-in (as I frequently go back and forth, especially when riding the subway or LIRR). This spring I noticed it having trouble holding a charge. I am also on the verge of replacing my ancient PC with an iMac ... already have a MacBook. So it was a priority to have an mp3 player I could sync with a Mac. None of my songs were downloaded; all are from CDs. I have over 1,200 songs on it.
I have replaced the Zen with an 80GB iPod Classic ($239 plus tax) and also bought the radio tuner attachment (another $49 plus tax). As for transferring the music, I just connected the USB HD where I keep the music and imported into iTunes. Easy. Had to re-do a handful of CDs, but not many.
My only complaint about the iPod is that using the radio tuner apparently draws more from the battery and I can only get approximately 16 hours out of it per charge.
I started off with a Creative Zen also, as a present. I owned the thing for about a month and a half before it locked up and stopped working completely. I returned it and bought and iPod nano 1st gen instead. I loved it. The interface was simple and sound quality good. I began to out grow the 4GB it offered. I decided to buy an ipod touch 16GB and it offers plenty of room for my 1400 songs. This purchase i do not regret. I guess i'm just one of those people who wants to pay extra for the apple name. They just make it easier.
