is there a way to transfer my contacts from my sprint sim card onto the 8gb iphone.
Sprint phones don't use SIM cards. At&t and T-mobile use SIM cards, Nextel uses a SIM card but is not compatible.
The SIM card from Sprint/Nextel is not compatible w/ the iPhone, you won't be able to transfer the contacts that way. One possibility is if you have a data cable, transfer the phone book from the Sprint phone to a computer and then transfer the phone book from the computer to the iPhone.
I couldn't find the answer to this anywhere online, and was surprised that no one at Apple, Sprint, AT&T, or Best Buy could help.
I went through so much effort that I made it the topic of my blog/podcast and documented the entire process, adding a lot of comedy to it along the way.
Read/Listen to it here:

I believe that you were successful, but this is how it was done for me recently.
I bought a phone from Tigo and wanted to copy the contacts I had on my SIM card
for Movistar Telefonica into it. I went to the Tigo office, but I didn't want to
ask them to unlock it, since I'd just bought it from them. They put my Movistar
SIM card into an unlocked phone, copied the contacts on it into the memory of the unlocked phone. Then, they put my Tigo SIM card into the unlocked phone and copied the contacts from the phone's memory to my Tigo SIM card. That worked fine!
Sorry, it won't work ;(.
