I've got to correct Molly about Silverlight. You can use it to watch the Olympics live on platforms other than Vista. During their test of the live streaming setup last month during the U.S. Olympic Trails, I was able to watch the stream on my mac running OSX and Firefox. You can test out your system by going here (http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/index.html) and clicking on any of the video links.
Just OS X and Vista?
Or what? What's this report about Vista only? Is it really that's it's, not XP.
The link you provide is not really a streaming link, correct? It will just prompt you to install Silverlight (version 2 beta) if you don't have it already, and then you can watch the previously recorded videos after restarting the browser. But what guarantee is there that this will work for live streaming?
I'm using XP, by the way.
The reason it's Vista and Silverlight only is because it's part of Vista Media Center. It's a link from the "online video" section in VMC.
Unfortunately, it's USA only as well. I get the button for "NBC Olympics", but then it says US only.
as i said, I successfully watched the live streams of the olympic trials a few weeks ago using just a mac with osx, the mac silverlight plugin, and firefox. I have seen nothing from either nbc or Microsoft that says you will need vista to watch it.
Tonight there will be the first 2 live streams on the nbc olympics sites of actual olympic events that will use the same silverlight player they will use for the rest of the games.
First the US men's gymnastics practice session at midnight ET (http://www.nbcolympics.com/gymnastics/news/newsid=167368.html#live+mens+gymnastics+tonight)
Then at 5 am ET, the opening rounds of the women's soccer competition (these are actual Olympic matches, not trails or practices) groups E, F, and G. at 5 am will be Japan v. New Zeland, Argentinia v. Canada, and Germany v. Brazil. At 7:45 ET (and lasting probably till you get to work if you are not on the west coast, it is soccer after all) will be China v. Sweden, Norway v. USA, and North Korea v. Nigeria. Links to those streams will appear here (http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv_and_online_listings/zone=ET/day=-2/sport=FB/online.html) when available and also on the main nbc olympic site.
I will try it at midnight and again in the morning on my mac at work and let you know how it goes.
Still have about 20 minutes of play time left in the USA v. Norway match. It looks great. Not HD, but very high quality widescreen SD. Trouble is it buffers alot on the work network.
They start streaming again tonight at 10 pm est. first more gymnastics practice, then opening rounds of mens soccer. links here http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/index.html
Comes load, loads. On my mac too.
Then a video plays that says 'sorry but NBC can not broadcast this out of the USA'.
***, can't companies get it through their thick heads that the INTERnet is.... INTERnational.
I'm in Australia, how am I now supposed to get streaming of the olympics?
In NBC's defense, Olympic broadcast rights are very tightly controlled. The Seven Network has the exclusive rights for Australia. you can find there online streaming here (http://au.tv.yahoo.com/tv/seven/)
The list of other countries exclusize broadcasters can be found here(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Summer_Olympics#Broadcasting)
This is kind of the last straw. ![]()
Bad news, due to rights, NBC is only allowed to stream the videos in US.
Since you live in Australia, you have to use the olympic coverage service provided by either Seven Network, or SBS....
I'm checking out the live broadcast of Women's Gymnastics right now. Some observations:
* Had to give zip code and select the "NBC partner" that I subscribe to. I don't subscribe to cable or satellite, but there was no option for that, so I just picked DirecTv. Based on the wording I suspect I would have been denied access if my pick didn't match my zip.
* There's no commentary, no informational banner to describe who's doing what. It's kind of a refreshing change from your typical sports broadcast, but I'm sure that will change when we move out of the preliminary events.
* They should call it Girls' Gymnastics. My goodness, they're small! And somebody's crying, that can't be good.
* Installation of Silverlight is optional (I'm running XPSP2), but you need it to use the "Enhanced Player".
* There are no controls to adjust buffering or quality.Video and audio are good.
* Maybe I'm just looking for things to complain about, but it looks smoggy in the arena. *cough*
It will be interesting to see how the stream holds up after the Opening Ceremony.
According to Ars the streaming will use Silverlight (which means Windows XP and Vista and Mac OS X). To download content you would need a version of Vista with Media Center (Home Premium or Ultimate).

as a mac user, I LOVE my OS X on my powerful Mac Pro, but sometimes I run apps that requires me go use Vista Ultimate via Boot Camp. (such as Adobe OnLocation, and Adobe Ultra).
So, during the olympics, I will be constantly going back and foward between OS X and Vista Ultimate So I can Just DOWNLOAD THE HQ CONTENT ON MY Computer.
If NBC just STAYED with iTunes and sell the olympic moments that I CAN KEEP FOREVER, I wouldn't be doing this.
