Camcorder Movie Setup

I am creating movies in my garage and want to control my camera remotely as well as focus and zoom but not at the cost of Adobe OnLocation. I have a Sony Mini-DV camcorder and firewire as well as a camcorder remote.
I am also looking for an affordable Pro-video software solution. I have considered Vegas Pro 8 and Adobe Primere. I am looking for something under $200 Academic Price. Because I qualify for Academic Discounts. If there are ANY other softwares I should consider please let me know.

Get a friend to control the camera. You direct, they control it.
