Too little too late

While I don't personally find it to be as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, if I didn't need to get a new system I wouldn't have bothered. There's really nothing that compelling about Vista compared to XP that warrants the upgrade. All the interesting bits, aside from Aero, were hurled overboard to try and keep the SS Vista afloat during development. So it's basically XP, with a bunch of UI elements made to (poorly) resemble OS X, and Aero, which is a poorly done copy of OS X's Quartz system. They didn't even have the decency to copy one of the best features from OS X: Expose. That Flip 3D thing is a joke. Of course I still think the Windows UI has been all downhill ever since Windows95. I rather liked, and even preferred, the old Windows 3.x interface.
There's just nothing about Vista that makes it a compelling upgrade over XP is the crux of it however. If they had kept WinFS around, and not made it a part of SQL Server, that might have been something to promote. Aero isn't enough on its own.

First, they're targeting January 2010 for a public release, so it's still a year and a half away. But for your question, they are trying to become more "predictable" and "regular." The idea is that a new version should come out every 3 years or so, not after 1 year (like XP did after ME/2000) or 5 years (like Vista after XP). The goal this time is to maintain almost absolute compatibility between Vista and Windows 7, while adding new features without anything drastic taking place.

For every $300 "Complete Computer System!", (or something similar), that was hawked to the unsuspecting computer-users community, there was one unhappy Vista user. Gee, I wonder why? Could it be the outrageously underpowered components that unscrupulous manufactures used? Could it be that these same, cheap built computers would have had a difficult time running XP? Or do we simply take the easier path to blame the most convenient suspect? Microsoft.
Don't like Vista? Fine, go to Linux, XP or even back to Win 98... But stop bellyaching. Vista is a great product, much more advanced than XP would or could ever be.
Of course this is only my opinion but as usual, I'm right.

And no, M$'s ads haven't convinced me of anything other that the contempt they show towards the buying public.

It's certainly a bit faster than my old XP SP2 machine (which I still have) and there are other features which I like but I am appalled at the amount of Windows software that will run unde XP but not under Vista. So far, for that reason, I prefere XP.

by bowacl - 8/9/08 3:09 PM In reply to: ...but not under Vista by john42most all my 14 yrs of software collection has been fine accept, Dogz 4 and a U3 software, which I didn't use anyway on my flash drive, other wise I am running dos games for the kids on it fine like Howie Mandels Tuneland, Traintown etc. I think it's not so much a Vista issue as it is newer hardware issue for the video, Quicktime or something along that line, one loaded in fine and said it didn't recognize the sound card but we hear the sound. My games went thru two age sets of Grankids since Windows 95 days, I had a few fall outs with XP so expect a few with Vista, this will give the kids a chance to have Dogz 5 and I have already went to another flash drive for more storage space.
