LAN to ISP Connectivity with Hardware Firewall

by frankgravante - 8/3/08 3:25 PM

LAN Configuration: 20 XP Machines, 1 WIN 2003 Domain, DHCP, Mail Server, network connected by CAT5e with 1 Dell Gigabyte Switch.

ISP Configuration: 1 DSL bridged modem (ISP requires bridge mode)

TO DO:
Purchase and install a robust, configurable hardware firewall between the LAN and the Internet DSL modem. Firewall must:
1. Protect LAN from intrusion
2. Provide for secure romote access to Workstations and Server by Network Administrator.
3. Provide a means to manage network authenticated user's access to internet (generally block all sites with listed exceptions allowed. Would prefer if exceptions could be managed for each individual authenticated network user).
4. Allow Email

Any recommendations for equipement, software, network configuration would be greatly appreciated. Budget is a concern as well.

Thank you

Give Dell another call and ask them to finish this for you.

I do not believe Dell manufactures a firewall...just resells other brands. Because of corporate rules/account I have to use dell machines and routers, but all other items can be purchased from other vendors which I try to do when possible to support a broader supply market. I thought it might be pertinent to mention the switch manufacturer since I suspect it will connect directly to the firewall?

I placed this post hoping someone will have purchased one of the many brands of firewall models out there which might fit the requirements/budget I noted and can give me a heads up on configuration since I have never set up a firewalled network before.

May I resubmit the post without mentioning the brand of the router?

Dell has full service there.

Remember this appears to be a business so my predilection is to head straight to Cisco and the major players without tinkering with the consumer gear you find on the shelf. If you are to spec this out, just hit the phone to Cisco, Dell and they will set you up.
