I've been trying to install Bonjour for Windows so I can use the Remote app for iPod touch. Unfortunately, I've had no luck with the installer, as it tries to start the Bonjour service and fails. The error message reads: "Service 'bonjour service' failed to start. verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." So now I've just copied the files over manually from a WinXP machine running Bonjour perfectly. Unfortunately, trying to start the Bonjour service from the Windows Services console only gives me a separate error. This one reads: "Windows could not start the Bonjour service on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -65549." Is there any way I can get Bonjour to install and run as a service?
On Vista I would turn off UAC and try to install again. On XP I would look at my PROTECTION software that can get in the way. Some won't turn that off for a test run so they are doomed to visit service counters.

and I've tried turning off UAC.
With that attempt to copy in files, etc. I've seen people have to start completely over due to such creative attempts.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows.html notes some requirements so make sure you have those. Remember my thoughts about protection software. I may have to be uninstalled thoroughly to get back to a stock OS.
Bob
that I might need to completely remove Norton--not just close it--in order to fix this?
While I am not ready to be uninstalled, "it" as in protection software may have to be. I've run into this with Symantec and other titles. Since I can reinstall such after it's a non-issue to me.
Good luck.

I had the same problem and couldn't find the solution anywhere. After a few days of messing around, what solved it for me was resetting the TCP/IP stack. In XP and Vista (turn off UAC), from the command prompt (as administrator), type: netsh int ip reset
reboot, and hopefully your bonjour will start like mine.
"Bonjour service failed to start, verify you have sufficient privileges" error message.
I have the same problem with the Bonjour Service error message.
I tried to install iTunes 7 on a new computer (Dell XPS 420) that
is running Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) and got the error.
I first disabled and then uninstalled my anti-virus and firewall
software. I disabled Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.
I tried both the iTunes 7 software and Bonjour for Windows.
In both programs the installation stops when the dialog reads
'starting services' and the error message comes up again.
I've tried most of the steps everyone here gave for a fix,
and nothing has worked.
I did run:services.msc, but Bonjour is not listed there.
I did run:netsh int ip reset, but that did not work.
I turned off the User Account Control, and that didn't work either.
What am I missing? Does anyone else have a solution for me?
I was struggling with this as well. I reset the TCP/Ip as suggested above and then installed Java (Free Download) on my computer. Restarted it and it worked. Very frustrating.
