Blu-ray owners: Expensive collections this fall?

by jostenmeat - 8/1/08 1:23 PM

Are you saving up for any of these?

Re-mastered (finally) Godfather trilogy, with more extras than you can shake a stick at... Sept 23, IIRC?

Band of Brothers, word is end of '08?

Criterion Collection's first batch of Bluray's in October:

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

Although I am a big fan...

of the Godfather trilogy, I think I will stick with my current DVD set. The DVD set was expensive enough when it first came out lol.

For me, I will continue to buy new releases on BD and only replace certain currently owned DVD titles with their BD counterparts. In most cases, it would only be either sci-fi/fantasy/action movies that I would consider buying again. Something that would benefit most from enhanced visuals and actually use the HD audio tracks. Or, for movies that had a disappointing DVD transfer, that was markedly better on BD (ie Spider-man, Mr & Mrs Smith, to name a couple).

Never watched Band of Brothers and i am not sure I have even heard of any of those Criterion flicks. I will check them out though.

For better or worse, I never bought the godfather series. The remaster looks like its going to really clean up a lot of the scenes, with a lot of the color restored. From what I have gathered, screen shots etc, it looks like a huge improvement.

Band of Brothers, content-wise, is really amazing. I highly recommend it Mike. Really top notch stuff IMO. The problem is the PQ. The DVDs look poor, IMO. The HD-DVD version is an improvement, but its still not up to par with the better transfers. So far, it appears that the transfers of both HD and BD versions are typically quite comparable, and this is why my hopes aren't as high.

Regarding the Criterion series, Im only familiar with a few. Last Emperor is a definite for me, and will be my first.

I don't own anything listed in my first post! Cheers.

I missed Last emperor...

the first time I read your post. That would be one title from the list that I do know lol.

I know that Band of Brothers is critically acclaimed and I wouldn't mind seeing it, but I would probably rent the BDs as opposed to buying them.

Lots of titles that are coming out that I am looking forward to though, most notably The Dark Knight. I might even be bamboozled into getting the Transformers BD, though that is not a definite. Paramount and their exclusive deal with HD-DVD still pisses me off lol, and the Transformers DVD is a very good transfer. I don't want another Pan's (Faun's) Labyrinth situation where the BD adds on incremental improvements to the DVD PQ. But that has more to do with Pan's being only an ok BD transfer, whereas I am sure Transformers would be stellar.

Then again, I only liked Transformers anyway so why am I even thinking about getting it again lol?

Still waiting for the Bourne's, LOTR, and the Matrix films of course. Tick tock lol.

I daresay the DVD version of Pan's might look better than the BD. Not 100% sure, but the BD is loaded with DNR. Faces are the worst looking out of my entire colletion possibly. A true disappointment.

I have Transformers, a gift. The animation/CG looks stellar. Live action is decent at times. Dark scenes are less than desirable. Its not reference/demo stuff outside of the CG sequences, IMO. So there is great inconsistency in PQ I think.

LOTR? oi.
