Eset NOD32

by akautz - 7/29/08 6:27 PM In reply to: What anti-virus programs do you use? by latenight9

Greetings,

I've been seriously involved with Windows based PCs since about 2001 and had my own small PC repair biz for a couple years. There is only one product I currently recommend to friends and associates - Eset's NOD32 (see eset.com for more info and to download a fully functional, free 30 day trial).

I have found NOD32 to be extremely effective, stable, fast, and low on resources. I have never had a virus (at least that I am aware of) since installing NOD32 about 2 years ago.

I used to like Norton a lot up until version 2003 was released. Version 2002 was a bit of a resource hog, but I found version 2003 was just downright bad programming. No less than two clients back to back had their computers go haywire after installing NAV 2003.

I thought McAfee was bad way back when Norton was good, and from things I have seen techs have reported over the years, I have never changed my opinion.

A tech friend of mine recommends Avast for clients who can't afford a good antivirus and so I began recommending it too; that is until Avast found a boat load of false positives on a friend's machine. I since convinced her to go with NOD32 and her PC is running smooth.

AVG seems 1/2 way decent, but I had a friend that had some sort of problem with AVG three or so years ago (I think he got a virus). He is now running NOD32 without a hitch.

I tried F-Secure Internet Security 2006 some time ago and I had two program crashes I don’t ever recall having crashed prior to that moment: Microsoft Active Sync and Outlook 2002.

As a final note, I hear techs speaking highly of a product called Kaspersky, but I have personally never used it. If I remember correctly, some techs I think have reported it is a bit heavy on resources, although I could be mistaken.

Take care,
Adam

Norton is bad

by Tomofumi - 7/31/08 1:03 AM In reply to: Eset NOD32 by akautz

Me too! I've stop using any Norton products after version 2002, since version 2003 they are going downhill and slowing my PC a lot, some games even unable to launch, I need to disable the Norton tray icon in order to play games! I've also installed NIS 2004 in my friend's PC, she complained that after XP bootup, it takes forever for the HDD to stop blinking, and all memory is used by Norton, it is slow to launch other programs like MSOFFICE after that...horrible...

After those incidents I've turned to ZoneAlarm 6.x with Antivirus, which is good enough for me and the system is very responsive (v6.0 to 6.1 is good, 6.5 is bad too, 7.x has performance problem). I also installed AVG Free 7.x in case sometimes i need additional checking. For rootkit detection, I'll trust Icesword which helped me to find out a very nasty IE-embedded virus in the past.

Actually when you are infected, the first sign you've got is those warnings coming from the firewall, since the virus will try to do something nasty (e.g. trying to connect to internet, open new process, etc), so I think FW+AV is the best combination to prevent infection...

AVG - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

by aircarl1 - 7/30/08 9:26 AM In reply to: What anti-virus programs do you use? by latenight9

We replaced Norton AV with AVG 7.5 at the office at the beginning of the year and have been satisfied with it. However, I decided to upgrade the office to the new version 8.0. Before upgrading at the office I always try it out on my home computer (which also has AVG 7.5). Well, the upgrade caused my internet connection to stop working. I went online (another computer) and filled out the tech support help for (I also emailed tech support directly). That's been 4 days ago and still no response - strike one. I also uninstalled version 8.0 (by the way it leaves lots of junk in your register) and attempted to install version 7.5 back in. Guess what, I got an error message and it would not install (and yes, I did all the stuff you're supposed to do and more) - strike 2. I then emailed and filled out another tech form - but again got no response - strike 3 and you're out. If this is how their tech support responds (read lack of), I certainly won't recommend it to any of our clients.

AVG Problems

by skipper4444 - 7/31/08 5:44 PM In reply to: AVG - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly by aircarl1

I had the same problem you did with the lack of response from AVG. I bought two copies of AVG Internet Security 7.5 and installed them in June. Interestingly, the copy I put on my PC turned out to be 8.0 even though the disk said 7.5. The copy on my laptop is what it said it is, i.e., 7.5. These were installed and registered June 6, 2008 and are supposed to be good for two years. Both computers tell me it will expire Dec. 2009! That's 1 1/2 years! I tried to update the 7.5 version to 8.0 but that wouldn't work. I contacted tech support but, like you, did not get a reply. I don't know how to reach them any other way. Does anyone else know how? (A friend bought his copy the same time/place I did and he's having exactly the same problem.)

AVG VERSION 8

by wasagakid - 8/5/08 7:38 AM In reply to: AVG - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly by aircarl1

Regarding your problem about the internet not working after you installed version 8. This may have coincided with a Micosoft XP update for KB951748 that came out last mth. If you are also running ZoneAlarm, your internet will stop working as mine did. ZoneAlarm came out a few weeks ago with an update to fix the problem. Until that was done I had to move the Program Contol slider from High to Medium and this allowed me to get back on the internet.
Otherwise, AVG 8 works great when you set the daily updates in the options and turn off auto scanning (do it manually) which may interupt you.

What AV do you use, PC Cillion Internet Security

by scotpeden - 8/1/08 6:54 PM In reply to: What anti-virus programs do you use? by latenight9

I've been suing them since early 2002 after several bad experiences with Norton and McAfee. I've only had one trouble, due to me over riding the warnings as I thought I could just uninstall the viewer, to find out it didn't go to my programs, took a few weeks with phone and mail help, but we found it was something new,and without having to lose anything to start over again, PC cillion tech support fixed it. Where as with McAfee and Norton, I lost everything.

Spysweeper w/antivirus and Threatfire (free)

by markpcfixer - 8/1/08 8:24 PM In reply to: What AV do you use, PC Cillion Internet Security by scotpeden

I am using a combination of Spysweeper w/antivirus and Threatfire, free version, with Vista Business. I got the Spysweeper package on sale at Best Buy, it was 19.99 for 3 computers, that is an incredible bargain. Threatfire is behavior based instead of scanning based on a database of signatures, so it can catch things the other miss, and does not at all interfere with other av programs, at least none that I've seen.

NOD32 is also an excellent product, as is Kapersky. I have also used Avira and it works quite well, it seems. Want to try the new Spyware Doctor w/antivirus when my current one expires. Anyone tried that one yet?

Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware/Spyware program: Sunbelt Vipre

by huizhe2 - 8/1/08 8:54 PM In reply to: What anti-virus programs do you use? by latenight9

I've been using AVG for years, ever since it first came out, but I was really unhappy with the company the last time I renewed (I don't have anything against using free programs, but I like to pay the companies that provide good apps that I feel I have to have and use every day). First, I couldn't order the renewal of AVG AV/Anti-malware without also paying an extra US$10 for a CD, which I did not want and which was never delivered. Second, when they stopped supporting 7.5, I was forced to go to 8.0-free (Sorry, but no more money for undelivered CDs). Recently, however, I switched two of my PCs to Sunbelt Vipre AV and anti-malware. I'm happy with it so far, especially because I could install it on the D drive in my Asus Eee-PC 900. That's important when the C drive is only 4 GB. I also switched from ZoneAlarm-free firewall to Comodo Firewall Pro-free because it, too, will install on the D drive, unlike ZA, which insists on the C drive. I'm happy with that too.
