Buzz Out Loud 771: Just a thought on the comments and discussion by the unix sysadmin about advertising for games: Tom mentioned that companies don't want to give up their revenue streams, but on the other hand World of Warcraft was also mentioned stating that the makers of WOW should just give their game away as a way of encouraging new subscribers. In recognition of the fact that it's easy to lose sight of where your subsequent money is coming from when you start out with a $50-90 commitment from your first-adopters, the thought I had was this: Why not just put a thermometer bar (or a blood-filled picture of the planet WOW or some other compelling graphic) somewhere into the game environment which shows players the distance (as measured by the declining proportion of software sales as other revenue sources grow) to the "give-away" goal? That way the company that created the software actually gets to appear clueful as players tell their friends and new players will join the MMOORPG meta verse and new revenue streams will grow out of the goodness and happiness that is generated by the simple understanding that is shared and the biz model will finally change and we can all be happy and have a good laugh at the days when "pirate" was once a word that poorly-run music and software companies used to compare downloads to disks...
oh well, I can dream can't I?
