Onkyo TXSR604 popping sound from Surround Speakers

by jrworth - 11/18/06 12:07 PM

I have been using an Onkyo TXSR604 to power my home theater for about two months. I have it connected to a Definitive Technology ProCinema 60 5.1 speaker system. Recently, the left surround speaker started making a popping sound. It is a short stuccato pop that is not tied to variations in loudness and appears to occur randomly. To rule out speaker problems, I switched the two surround speakers and the sound continued to come out of the left side. To rule out speaker cable problems, I switched the left and right outputs on the back of the receiver. When I did this, the popping started coming out of the right side. Hence, it seems clearly to be linked to the left surround output on the receiver.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Any suggestions? The receiver is under warranty, but I don't really want to be without it if I can help it.

Thanks.

Sounds like you have a voice coil rubbing then hanging up Do this with even preasure on the speaker in question push the speaker in and out and if you feel is rubbing or a scrapping sound that is your problem Or mabey you can find a audio store in your area to check it out good luck and post back to us steweeee

Still No Luck

Thanks for the tip. I tried your recommendation and still no luck. Problem occurs even if I hook a different speaker up to the left surround. This leads me to think it's a problem with the receiver rather than the speaker.

MR. WORTH MAY I SUGGEST

So Sorry you have a defective Amp And sometimes its cheaper to replace one than the high cost of repair I would contact the manufacter direct ususallly a 800 # They usually charge a flat rate for repair which is usually very reasonable, If you send it to the factory you know the repair will be done rite and they will use factory parts, If you decide to replace it Think Denon, there are many great amps beside Denon but Denon tends to hold its value I have the 3805 and I love it good luck steweeeee

Same receiver same problem!

I was just doing some poking around on the Internet about this same problem with my Onkyo TXSR604. I have a Klipsch surround and sounded perfect for the first 6 or 10 months. It's a popping from the left rear speaker every so often and doesn't matter if I'm watching a DVD or cable.

I notice this thread is a little older, but would really really like to hear from you about the conclusion with your Onkyo.

Thank you much!
Colin

Yamaha same problem

by mikev4155 - 7/25/08 3:48 PM In reply to: Onkyo TXSR604 popping sound from Surround Speakers by jrworth

Unfortunately I have the same problem with my Yamaha HTR 5450 receiver. My receiver started off with a faint pop on the right speaker so I switched the speaker wire (as you did) and my left speaker started popping. Also, when I hit the switch button on the receiver I also hear the popping sound, my conclusion, “The receiver.” - I did have the Yamaha receiver for 12 years and it served its purpose well. Now my radar is on the Denon AVR 1909.
