Why are there gray and green bars shown? I set the volume and I assume that is the green bar because it never goes above the slider I set. But what is the light gray bar that is shown behind it? vista help and google didn't help.
is the sound you are hearing right now with the volume level you set, the gray bar behind is where the volume would be at a 100%.

100% of what?
I turn it up all the way and the gray bar only reached the halfway point on the slider. Does it depend on how load the music/sound is?
The green bar represents the actual volume being outputted at any given time. The grey bar represents how high the green bar would be if you turned the device volume up to 100 but left the application volumes alone. How high the grey bar goes is therefore influenced by the volume of the application outputting the sound, not just the device sound level. Thus, the higher you turn the device volume the less grey that should show, based on the percentages.

oh okay I figured it must be something like that.
Thank you for your help.
