Pcanywhere and Linksys WRT350N

by bigj164019 - 7/18/08 9:54 AM

I have a Linksys WRT350N, wired to 1 desktop, and wireless to two laptops.
From external, I am unable to PcAnywhere connect to either of the laptops. I can connect to the wired desktop fine.
I have internal static IP's for each, and separate ports forwarding to them
Desktop 5631 and 5632 to IP 192.168.3.200
Laptop1 5641 and 5642 to IP 192.168.3.201
Laptop2 5651 and 5652 to IP 192.168.3.202
I have configured the Remotes and the Host with the respective ports.

When I connect via PcAnywhere, I connect to the external Static IP address, and select ports 5631/5632 for the desktop with no problems or delays.
But when I try to connect to either laptop on their selected ports, No Connection.

I also use Windows Firewall on each computer and all of them have exceptions for the ports specified.
I haven't been able to find much literature on web for this specific problem.
Any advice or suggestions?

Jay

Check the router's firewall too.

Sorry but there is not a tool for you to dump the configuration of the router so go look for it.

But if asking you to look for a firewall in your router is unclear please arrange for on site support.

Try hardwiring

by blueOrbit - 7/18/08 10:42 AM In reply to: Pcanywhere and Linksys WRT350N by bigj164019

Have you tried hard-wiring the laptops to see if that makes a difference? If that works then there must be a setting someplace preventing wireless hosting.
I had this same problem a long time ago and finally gave up on PCA altogether due to it's cost and complexity. Although this isn't really a solution to your problem, you might try the free version of Logmein. Logmein free doesn't have all the features of PCA (like file transfer), but it's much easier to setup (no port forwarding) and flexible (no fixed IP addresses)... plus you can access it from any internet connected PC, no need to install PCA on the remote.

Re Hardwiring

I haven't thought to try that. Will have to try that for a test.
I am however rather fond of PCAW. Right now, i am connecting to home PC, then controlling it to connect to the other laptop.
This makes for frustratingly SLOW speed, but is a temp fix.
I have the routers firewall off, ports forwarded and all. Still notta.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Idea 2. POWER SETTINGS

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 7/18/08 11:04 AM In reply to: Pcanywhere and Linksys WRT350N by bigj164019

Many laptops I know of have a power save feature on the wifi and other places. Tell me how you set these.

The power save feature only applies to the NIC on this Dell Inspiron, and it also is disabled in the bios.

I'm surrounded by at least a dozen. After checking 5 machines I find power saving settings for the wifi card. As such I respectfully write it appears to show for the wifi too.

Of course we have fairly plain XP Pro from Dell business units.

Ok, let me show you that in another aspect.
I CAN connect to the laptops when im INSIDE the network.
Like right now, im in the Gulf of mexico, connected via PCAW to my home PC. Then im connected from the home PC to the laptop.

I think this completely rules out the power problem.
I highly suspect the router, but have the ports open.

Thanks for your multiple approach to my problem.

Go sideways.

Run PCAW on the desktop you connected to and try to get to the laptop?

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT300N/pcAnywhere.htm and triple check it.

I am connected to the desktop and to the laptop via the desktop.
And I have checked that portforward list a gazzilion times.
The ports are forwarded to each IP.

Whats next? Shoot the router?

AT&T/Bellsouth. Never heard of ISP limiting ports. Hmmm...

Yes, Router firewall disable during testing. No good.

And those filters too.

I have another thought but can't find it documented. Is this router limited to just ONE VPN incoming connection?
