My brother and I both went digital with music in the last year. He went iPod and I put my music collection on Windows Media Player. Recently we exchanged the raw files. iTunes converted all my WMA files to M4As for his use. I am looking for software to convert his M4A files to WMA. I have seen some freeware that works a file at a time or a folder at a time. I am looking for software suggestions that can convert an entire library (I know it may need to run overnight coverting) from iTunes to Windows Media Player files.
I could if that's the way to a quicker, easier solution.
You just have to change settings in iTunes:
Go to edit menu, then preferences, choose the advanced tab, then to the importing tab, then choose import using mp3 encoder. This works as long as all of the songs are DRM free. That is, any purchased content through the iTunes Store will only work if they are iTunes Plus tracks. If they are all ripped cds or otherwise started off as mp3s there should be no probblem. If you don't want to download iTunes, you can have your brother do it for you and then give you the resulting files. Then he can change his settings back to aac.
Probably there are other programs that can do this. You might have to be patient and wait for more responses. I'm mainly an iTunes user and thought I would just put it out there.
I tried your suggestion. Unless I am making a mistake, iTunes won't let me import more than one file at a time. I don't have CDs. It's 22GB in 411 folders sitting on an external hard drive.
One other step I missed. After doing the above suggestion, when you right-click on a music track, there is an option to Convert Selection to MP3.
I think this may be the answer.
If you put all 422 folders into one folder (call it Music or something) you can import the all of the music in them at once by using "Add folder to library"
Love this thing.
Use it all the time.
Just google "free zune video converter"
Change the settings so it converts to WMA.
Drag the files and convert.
iTunes works too, but it creates duplicate files in the same folder, and takes forever.
I converted about 2k songs, about 30 hours for high bitrate MP3s.
