Yikes, guess I'm sticking with my iPaq smartphone. ugh, was hoping to get away from Windows Mobile. Blackberry here i come.

Of the three major cell phone carriers in Canada, only 1 I believe was ever a crown corporation for traditional telephone service - Telus in the west - and the other was a government-sanctioned monopoly - Bell Canada in the east. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Rogers, on the other hand, has never been a traditional telco. They originally were in the cable TV business in Ontario (as Rogers Cable) and later expanded into the cell phone business, finally expanding into home VoIP service just a few years ago.
Most people would agree that the lack of competition in Canada's cell phone market is the direct result of the CRTC allowing 3 large companies to create and maintain a triopoly(?). Back in the 90's and early 2000's there were other competitors, the most well known being Fido. Unfortunately Fido was swallowed up by Rogers a few years ago and now operates as a separate brand for Rogers with the same expensive pricing. Hopefully things will start to change when new carriers start using the new spectrum the CRTC is selling off.
