GEO2003. As I was throwing a couple of negatives in my original reply concerning AVG8, I opted not to mention what I was currently using. But after reading your item, wanted to say thanks for the tip but also wanted you to know I have been using Avast for over a year now. I also
agree with you that it is a great product (so far........................)

Avast is great but.......

Avast is user friendly and dosen't take up much resources. The only disadvantage is that I can't update the definition files on a PC which has no access to the internet. Any suggestion?

DEFINITION FILES UPDATE

Kind of strange that you are protecting a pc with no internet connection.
In any case go to AVAST.com and download the latest definition file to thumb drive, usb drivecd-rw, or dvd-rw, that way you don't waste the entire disk on one file, I believe they have it in exe format, and then you can take that file to your other pc and install it.

Moved from Avast! to AVG ...

I used and recommended Avast! for years, but 10-15 months ago it began randomly "losing" SMTP accounts -- I and others could receive email but couldn't send it while Avast! was running. Reinstalling helped for a while but the problem always came back, so last year I finally switched to AVG on one machine and the problem was solved. I've since switched to AVG on all my Windows machines.

Since upgrading to AVG 8 I'm running into occasional slowdowns and two lockups (one AVG process was using 99% of my CPU); I'm becoming more and more convinced Windows is simply so vulnerable that no competent AV program can keep up with it -- it's like trying to guard a wheelbarrow full of hundred-dollar bills while rolling it through southside Chicago on a windy night. Next stop -- Linux everywhere.

SMTP AND OTHER EMAIL PORTS

You said that you are experiencing lock ups and slow downs using AVG,
Avast has two shields that controll how emails are received and scan and their relative settings based on the COMMON ports used SMTP, IMAP, NNTP cover under the INTERNET MAIL SHIELD, and the OUTLOOK/EXCHANGE SHIELD. Selecting any or both of them will allow you to redirect the emails to the appropriate PORTS that you are using in your company/or group. You just have to know the correct ports to corrected in the shields. I know it works great, without any errors with Vista Mail, Outlook 2002, MSN Hotmail, Yahoo Mail.
From my perspective and haven't done a lot testing with the antivirus programs (Free) I would still suggest that you intall it again, and find the correct ports to excempt. The Re-direction, Advance, Heuristics, and Advance Heuristics Tabs on both shields should help you.
You can even try to turn off those shields for a small period of time and test to see if all emails are received, then turn one feture at a time to see what's the culprit. Maybe something on your network is preventing AVAST from router traffic..
In reference to your comment no antivirus can keep up with windows machines, I have to tell you, I have a 4 yeard old laptop 2GB MEM,2GH Pentium M - MOVED TO VISTA, a 3 year old 1GB MEM, 1.87GH Pentium - XP MEDIA CENTER, and one 6 year old Desktop 512MB MEM, 2.6GZ CPU - XP HOME.

All of them ran really slow with AVG 7.5 and older, AVG allowed viruses to penetrate two machines when redirected to other pages.
But with AVAST, any redirection or downloading examines the pages and packets immediately and stops transmission to your pc of anything that could potentially be trouble. It is also great because it does not have alot of false positives. If I remember correctly Avast acts as a proxy re-routing everything through port 80 in order to have this kind of control.
Please read more on their help files or website to understand how it works.
In any case my CPU utilization never goes to 99 percent when performing a manual scan within windows, also remember that once your computer has been found clean, there is no need to do daily scans, but Avast is always working in the backgroud to protect you.

I don't undertand why people prefer to do schedule scans, so long as your AV is working great in the background it should not let anything in the way Avast does. It does not work the same with AVG.

I use to love AVG, until it let in over 21 different viruses in two of the machines.

slow AVG

On some win-tel boxes AVG 8 runs terribly slow - mine is included. You can wait for AVG to rewrite their program - which may or may not happen; or you may try the following: PC Tools and Threatfire for anti-virus, Spybot Search And Destroy for spy-ware, and Glary Utilities to neaten things up a bit. All programs are freeware and available at download.com (that's c-net). And all run speedily on my dual core win-tel box.

Dump AVG for Aviria AntiVir Personal Free Addition. Works great and only takes 20 plus minutes to scan. Check it out. Rated the best free antivirus program by PC World.

AVG 7.5 Free - Support ends 31/08/2008

"Support for AVG 7.5 Free Edition is planned to end on 31st August 2008.

No more virus updates are planned for after that date.

Note that no more 'program' updates are due! Only virus updates will continue until the end date.

AVG 7.5 Paid version will be supported until 31/12/08.

Older Systems

Great forum. Great posts. Thanks everyone.

I have been an avid, loyal AVG user for years now; recommended AVG to friends, family and supported customers. Now, I flag them off to something else if their computers have less than a single core 2 GHz CPU.

I have tried PC Tools AV (not bad), Avast (clunky and other quirks) and Avira (forgot now why I abandoned that one). None of them inspired me to completely leave AVG! I have faith AVG will eventually listen and change the program - too bad, we FREE users have no voice with them whatsoever.

I have 6 computers running XP Pro, 1=2.4GHz/110GB HDD; 3=1.6GHz/60 GB HDD; 1=900MHz/20GB HDD; 1=1.2GHz/40GB HDD.

AVG 8 takes 5-7 hours on the 900MHz/20GB, AVG 8 runs 55- 180 mins on the 2.4/110GB HDD and about 2-3 hours plus on the 1.6Ghz/40GB HDD systems.

The 1.6GHz are all laptops - they get HOT and I mean HOT running AVG 8 scans. No way am I going to burn memory, CPU, mobo or HDD due to an anti-virus program running scans.

I uninstalled AVG 8 and re-installed AVG 7.5 for now on the above laptop since it is use all day every day. AVG 7.5 scan takes about 40 mins. on that 1.6GHz/60GB HDD - ACCEPTABLE.

As it is on the rest of the computers, I set scans to run once a week, FAST scan and turned off scanning cookies. The 2.4 GHZ does have enough guts to allow usage while a scan is in progress so I will keep AVG 8 on there for now.

If we have to disable components to save the computers, what good is it? What good is it if it overheats your system and causes hardware failures?

Grisoft - listen up! We, your faithful users, do not want nor need all the components you slapped into AVG 8. We can live without all that - just a high quality anti-virus is what we all want and need.

The latest PROGRAM updates you to build 8.0.138 (see main interface, left side, AVG Version number). It did fix a few things like being able to see a scan is occurring from the sys tray icon, being able to pause or stop scans when they are running AND check for updates from the icon. Good start but falls short of getting at the real problem - it just takes too bleeding long to scan a disk.

I have 2.41 GHz, 1.37 GB of ram - for what it's worth.

Have you had it run scans on its own yet? I'm waiting for it tonight (LOL) -- I just interrupt and go on my merry way. Maybe like SP3 -- it's just on "some" PC's. I do have an AMD processor - lucky me! HP did come out with a fix for that soon after I got SP3'd by Microsoft.

AVG woes.......

After getting rid of Norton suite,(came with the computer and HUGE resource hog) I started using AVG free. I had no problems for years until this latest edition. I could not even get it to load correctly no matter what I did sooooo....I switched to AVAST! Happy days are here again. Slick as a whistle and works like a charm. I doubt I'll ever go back to AVG land, at least until they get the bugs worked out.

AVG scan time

AVG 8.0 takes much longer on my Compaq Presario (2 hours) than it ever did with AVG 7.5.

The past 2 days, I've had an odd thing happen. Last night it began at 9:30 p.m.; tonight at 8:53 p.m. -- it automatically starts doing a computer scan.

I have it set to do a scan at 3 a.m. and every day and don't have it in the scheduled task area. Why it starts, I don't know. I was gone tonight and it started. I've opened the progam, gone to the computer scan area and interrupted the scan because I don't need my PC scanned at the current moment.

I would like to be the one to determine and begin any AVG scans that are accomplished on my PC -- thank you AVG!

Has anyone else had these automatic scans start on their PCs when it's not set to do that?

Automatic scanning starts

It does take considerably longer for a virus scan with AVG 8.0 than it did for 7.5 -- it now takes a bit over 2 hours, but I have lots of my PC (LOL).

What I've been experiencing the past 2 days is the visus scan starts automatically and I have set the scan at 3 a.m. daily. It's not under the scheduled task part so I don't know why it's doing scanning. I open AVG 8.0, go to the computer scan area, and interrupt the scan because I don't want it scanning at the time it's scanning. I want to be the one who determines when I scan my PC. The scan last night began at 9:30 p.m.; tonight it was 8:53 p.m. and I wasn't even here.

Has anyone been experiencing this situation?

I had a problem with AVG 7 and had to uninstall it. When I tried to download and reinstall I found that they had forced AVG 8 on me.

However, considering what it does, a leap from 40mins to 1.5 hours is not too painful.

I have had none of the probs other people are reporting, it updates at the time specified and seems to be running smoothly.

It is a fact of life that to keep their jobs people are going to tinker and produce a "bigger and better product" (to hell with the users)... look at the new phones they do everything but make a cup of coffee!! and, after all, AVG is free and we don't have to use it. Don't get me wrong, one fault with AVG 8 and I will be squealing like a stuck pig.

Hi Basil - guess I'm a glutten for punishment -- once an avg user, always one. I tried Avast and didn't care for it, but probably didn't give it a fair chance. I keep thinking AVG doesn't want to have the free end anymore, but hope I'm wrong. Keeping my fingers crossed -- my automatic scan didn't do tonight, so maybe they fixed in an update. I doubt that though - probably just a fluke with my PC.
