I had the same problem for over a month and could not find an answer on this forum so I went into the CPU forum of this site. Apparently the thermal compound between the CPU and the heatsink had dried out and no heat was being transfered. Once I cleaned both surfaces with alcohol and put an even coat of compound on both, the computer fired up and has been running nicely and faster for the last three weeks. I hope this helps.

I think I might have the same problem. But my laptop only shuts down when it isn't plugged in(it's not instant either it usually goes off in about 15 min)...as long as it is plugged in it works fine. I bought a new battery about 7 months

Other than "shutdowns" your problem comes from a different sort. As a laptop, and as you mentioned a new battery at 7mos. well that's not new now. Find out your past recharge cycle history. If it say, worth 200 full recharges, and you've done actual 350 1/2 charges, that's roughly 75% of the life of the battery and should start to show wear&tear abit. At about 12mos. or so, many a laptop battery is on they're last legs, so expect it. Also, if a battery is brought from an unknown source that's not a typical brandname or "recommended" those types of batteries may have spotty history or simply put, "are cheaply made". If you demanding laptop use, a battery life can only do so much. Also, if you hadn't already, be sure the laptop is cooled well and/or had a recent cleaning(blow-out odf dust) or inspection of fan operation.

I bought the computer back in 2006 and the battery that came with it just went out 7 months ago and I haven't been using my computer any differently than I had before. And the new battery I bought is a dell battery. When the last one went out the battery life indicators on the battery would turn amber but on my new battery the indicator lights are still green. And I recently cleaned the fan and heat sink(but my fan does seem to be constantly running)
