Netflix supposed reasoning for cancelling profiles

"The Netflix site was designed without profiles, then features were added continuously for a few years, then profiles were added, but with minimum disruption to existing features, rather than a ground-up redesign, then a few more years of features were added over the top.
Now in some ways its too messy and its slowing down our ability to change and add new features, so a lot of investment is going into cleaning up the code. Part of that cleanup is to simplify and re-implement things so that we can get more interesting and advanced things done more quickly in the future. For this feature that is used by a percent or two of the user base, it will make cleanup a lot faster by removing it."

by wyopistachio - 6/30/08 3:54 PM In reply to: Profiles staying by philb30When Netflix was doing wrong by their customers, they deserved the response they got from their users. Now that they are "doing the right thing" they deserve some credit.
I imagine this will end up being an even bigger hassle on the "backend" for the NF programmers ... now that there has been so much discussion of profiles, they will have many more people interested in it. It really is a marriage saver.

Hidden feature

I signed up in January and didn't even know about it until they decided to ditch it. Now that they're keeping it, I tried to go in and add a profile for my wife. However, I can't find the link to add a profile anywhere. Do I have to say some magic words or something?

Keep watching for it, it really is a killer feature if you have more than one person in the house, or you want to keep a TV series coming in the proper order.
Maybe, then, this is what happened . . .
