I wish I found this blog thread earlier...... I have been having major problems with my Sony laptop VGN-SZ110 that I only purchased less than 2 years ago for almost 2G. For the last 6 months it has been shutting down on me and I have had to reboot several times sometimes with abandon. I took it back to Bestbuy [seller] and was told that first I did not buy the warranty; then the Geek guys told me something about the motherboard and that only Sony can fix. Well - I refuse to spend the money that Sony is asking for to even look at the computer. I am not sure what my options are - any ideas?

Defective Sony Vaio VGN-NR Series

I bought a Sony Vaio VGN-NR Series from Best Buy in New York about 1 month ago. I used it for 2 weeks in the US and it worked fine. When I went back to the Philippines, I tried to turn on the unit again and I encountered this problem: The power light and battery light is on, but the screen is dead. The fan is also dead and there is no sound coming from the unit at all. I tried to turning the computer on and off several times and the same thing happens: power and battery lights on, but machine dead. I surfed the Net and discovered this is a common problem of Sony Vaio models.

My situation is quite difficult because the Sony Service Centers here in the Philippines refuse to repair or even check my unit. They insist that I have to have it checked and/or repaired in the US. I have already emailed Sony and they suggest some troubleshooting steps that I take (i.e., removing and reinstalling the RAM). based on other forums that I've read this does not work at all. As per the Sony email, if this does not work, I have to bring it to them for repair.

My dilemma now is whether I should incur the shipping costs of having the unit sent back to the US for repair or just have it repaired here in the Philippines and lose the warranty.

What do you guys suggest that I do? It appears from your posts that even if I have the unit shipped back to the US, Sony will still give me a hard time before repairing my unit. I've only had the unit for a month and it's already useless!

Buy in your country next time.

Yes, I have heard this before "but it costs more." Then you read posts about out of country warranty and support (non-existent.)

Your choices are few here. Saving money by buying out of country is a minefield. Some make it through others write stories like yours.

-> Make a choice to pay for repair (expect to pay about the cost of a new laptop for that) or ship it out and hope. You will pay shipping and all that so don't act surprised.

Motherboard/power problems

I have had a powering up problem with my Sony Vaio VGNS150 laptop for a while. There was an article on Sony's website confirming this problem and that it was a recall from a faulty motherboard. They have since removed this article. Anyone know of any fix to this problem or how to get Sony to honor the recall? Thanks.

I have a Sony Vaio s series laptop - will not boot up. Has anyone resolved this problem? Is it the motherboard? How can I test?

Here's why. It's a bit much to ask you to pop in a new or good motherboard. As to your other question, I take it that you didn't read all the above.

Sony Vaio Laptop & Poor Quality aka - "Junk"

Imagine I am shopping for a laptop for my husband for Christmas... they don't have the one I want "Hewlett-Packard" so the nice salesman offers me to get this great "Sony Vaio" which more features for the same price.. oh what a deal "Buyers Beware" I get the laptop home and it seems nice.. great features.. etc. Then it starts to get hot when I have in on my lap..hmmm curious. Then I come home from work one day.. laptop is completely dead.. the AC Adapter has a light on but nothing when I press the button on the laptop.. not a single light response. So I call Sony .. this is where the fun begins.. first they tell me to take the battery out.. done... nothing.. then they say oh you will have to send it to Sony repair centre... Remember this laptop is 3 months.. old.. ok here is the good news.. they tell me the laptop has been subjected to water a some point.. (never happened) so my warranty is void... then they tell me ... that I will to pay $1,027.00 for the repairs.. Motherboard, new battery and other parts.. hmm only paid $800 to buy it new.. ok well then we will ship your unrepaired laptop back to me.. and here is the best part.. we will charge you $70.00 for looking at it.. oh but we will waive that charge cause.. ? I will never in my life purchase another Sony product .. I have a dead brand new laptop.. anyone know where to buy a new motherboard.. love to know .. seems like "everything Sony" is Junk...!
