Both 32 and 64 Bit

by ESUNintel - 6/28/08 10:39 PM In reply to: Poll How many bits is your main computer's operating system? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have two Mac's (a Mac Mini and a Macbook Air), those are both running Mac OS X Leopard, on 64-bit Core 2 Duo's, and it is a 64-bit operating system. My desktop is running an Intel Extreme Quad Core, also 64-bit, but I am running 32-bit Windows Vista Home Premium due to compatibility issues with 64-bit operating systems, plus all I need is 4GB of RAM. My UMPC, Samsung Q1 Ultra, I think only has a 32-bit processor (it's an Intel A100), and it runs XP Pro 32-bit. I don't really have the need to run 64-bit Vista or XP. I have to run 64-bit OS X though, but that's how it comes, and for a 64-bit OS, I think it has less compatibility issues than any 64-bit Microsoft OS. Only way I would run 64-bit Microsoft stuff is through VM Ware Fusion/Workstation.

32-bit Vista

by Spartan_458 - 6/29/08 5:41 AM In reply to: Poll How many bits is your main computer's operating system? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm currently running 32-bit Vista on a Dell Dimension E520 with a 2.8 GHz Dual-Core Pentium D and 1 GB RAM. Runs great, does everything I need it to do.

Multiple operating systems

by Barry_bca - 6/29/08 10:56 AM In reply to: Poll How many bits is your main computer's operating system? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am running multiple Windows operating systems:

Windows XP Professional-64bit on custom built machine no internet access
Most stable Windows system I have ever had
Windows XP Professional-64bit on custom built machine with internet
Very unstable with primary problems relating to Flash and Linksys wireless adapter. Problems were just about fixed before I.E. 7 was installed and BSODs became routine again
Windows 32bit Vista Home Premium on Toshiba laptop
No problems
Windows XP-32bit on Dell Inspiron laptop works fine

Wish Vista had one Version

by pburkeiii - 6/29/08 2:01 PM In reply to: Poll How many bits is your main computer's operating system? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I wish vista had one version that would take advantage of all your computer's hardware. For all those people who just bought a PC with a 64-bit processor, but are only using 32-bits. i think it is stupid on Microsoft's part to make an OS that does not take full advantage of today's software. Most of the Computers on today's market are 64-bit. why not include both 32 and 64 bit in the same version (i.e. Home Premium) and let the installer automatically determine the hardware specifications.

32, or 64 bits, that is A VERY GOOD QUESTION !!!

by Jackie Wright - 6/30/08 12:37 AM In reply to: Poll How many bits is your main computer's operating system? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I`ve had my desktop for about 2 years, and up until recently, I thought I knew it inside and out--- but boy was I wrong !!! I found out the hard way. Now listen carefully or your just going to think I`m crazy, or just plain stupid! When I purchased my pc, the documentation referred to it as EMachines Model W3115 Media Center Edition with Windows XP (SP2) AMD Sempron 32 bit, X86 based desktop PC. I like to take good care of it and as long as I don`t SCREW IT UP, it runs FLAWLESSLY!!! It seems that I was doing something wrong every time I turned around, and I couldn`t for the life of me figure out why... Turns out that I really didn`t know what it was, and was quite simply installing wrong software (updated drivers, bug fixes etc. etc.). In a two year period, I`ve gone through THREE (3) total system recoverys, two of which were caused by incorrect software that was recommended after running various system scans.
I`m still not positive about the system, it turns out I have a PC that is E-Machine, built by Gateway, and no help and support center, software scan, system diagnostic scan or even my very own system information can tell me the same thing ! One tells me I`m running Windows XP Media Center Edition, 32bit X86based PC, another tells me it`s a Windows XP Professional 64 bit ! So I`m very careful about what I install!!!
Don`t get me wrong, I wouldn`t trade it for any other system that I know of, I`m hooked up to T1.5 high speed DSL and when my baby is healthy and runnin` good, its` a real joy to fly. My Picture and graphics are really great! Not to mention, I can Download a 700 plus MB High def. movie in about a minute and ten seconds.
As I said I`m not positive what I have---I think its` a 32 bitX86, but I can`t tell you for sure. Have you ever heard of this before? If so, do you have any advice for me? I would GREATLY appreciate knowing what I`ve got. Sincerely, Jack

32-bit Windows XP Pro SP3 - work/storage system, runs great
64-bit Vista Ultimate SP1 - gaming system, runs great

The only issue I had with my 64-bit was compatability with my SB-Live! card, which I removed and went with onboard audio instead, actually sounds better than the Live! did under XP!

64 Bit - Mac OS

by michaelcvoigt - 7/1/08 10:50 AM In reply to: Poll How many bits is your main computer's operating system? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Have been 64-bit for years, I don't even notice or care .. crap just works. Completely transparent to me, as it should be.

64-bit

64-bit (Vista Ultimate)

Pretty good. I think this OS is pretty awesome and it's a pain to have to use another OS...I wouldn't even go for a 32-bit Vista anymore in the future...unless it's real cheap and just for surfing the net in the bathroom.

Got all old games to work by looking up in the internet and downloading "fixes".

Discarded old programs that didn't work for new substitutes...which are those free things that I just kept way longer than I should have anyway.

Have an old XP Pro 32-bit computer that collects dust. Was thinking of making it an internet station but never bothered and prolly will donate it for a tax write-off. :P

Have an older Dell with XP-Pro 32-bit computer that collects more dust. Was thinking of trying Ubuntu for kicks but didn't want to waste my time in case the install doesn't work imediately. haha

Oh...and a really old HP as a small table. lol

32 bit

by volitaire77 - 8/31/08 1:27 PM In reply to: Poll How many bits is your main computer's operating system? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Two machines, both running Windows XP sp3, one is a Dell with XP professional, the other an HP with Win XP Home. Both buggy and slow, though the HP is much worse-almost un-usable.
