Can I delete IE?

by newg - 6/23/08 7:16 PM

No...

Internet Explorer is needed by Windows Update, some websites, and a list of third-party programs in order to function. You can set Firefox as your default browser (it''ll automatically prompt you to do so), but it's strongly recommended that you do not attempt to remove Internet Explorer.

IE deletion

by Phil Crase - 6/26/08 6:11 AM In reply to: Can I delete IE? by newg

Nope don't do that, use Mozilla or Opera, preferably Mozilla, works very well. If you dump IE you could have some issues with Windows. Just go to Mozilla and you will be a happy camper. Good luck!

You can't, actually.

by Tarq57 - 6/26/08 9:10 PM In reply to: IE deletion by Phil Crase

It's part of Windows. If there is an entry in "add/remove programs", all that pertains to is rolling back IE7 to the previous version, IE6.
Don't try to remove it.

You can.

It is possible to delete IE but it's not reccomended.

I don't want to get into an argument about which is better but I use IE7 at work, Firefox at home.

They're both great browsers.

However, IE7 doesn't have half of the neat features Firefox has.

Anyway, your question has been answered.

Thanks,

Mad.

IE Tab with Firefox

by Catman51 - 6/27/08 6:38 PM In reply to: You can. by Maddogmcree

I use Firefox with the IETab extension, that way I never bring up Internet Explorer. It works with MS Update too.

Actually, you can.

You can remove Internet explorer COMPLETELY from your OS. However, explorer.exe is a part of IE so you can remove it, you just won't have your file browser and classic start button, desktop, etc. However if you leave MSHTML.DLL you will seem to have IE removed but the basis and UI will still be there. By the way, if you successfully remove IE your computer will be quite faster because the whole IE architecture takes a big chunk of the Registry and Startup tasks.

by Chasgustaf - 6/27/08 8:03 PM In reply to: Actually, you can. by everwanted2

I had no problem with Firefox 2 but had to uninstall Firefox 3 because it took over my IE even though I told it not to. Completely uninstalled Firefox 3, removed it from registry. tried th edownload again, still wants to be the default browser. Sorry but if I can't have both Fire Fox loses.

Set IE as default browser...

by TooSpooky - 6/27/08 10:25 PM In reply to: Mozilla Firefox 3 and IE by Chasgustaf

Procedure to Change the Default Web Browser to Internet Explorer
i. Start IE and click "Tools" -> "Internet Options" - "Programs".
Check the box "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser".
Then click "OK" button to apply this setting. Then exit IE.

Firefox 3 took over all IE Shortcuts

by norm7978 - 9/16/08 8:36 PM In reply to: Mozilla Firefox 3 and IE by Chasgustaf

To fix this go Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs->Set Program Access and Defaults Expand Custom and set default Web browser to IE. Now all short cuts invoke IE again.

default browser

by Zhuge_Liang - 9/17/08 5:37 AM In reply to: Mozilla Firefox 3 and IE by Chasgustaf

You can set up your IE as default browser very easily.

Open IE.
Go to TOOLS
INTERNET OPTIONS (a small window will appear)
PROGRAMS (this is a tab within the above mentioned window). at the bottom of this will be a box to check for IE being the default browser. Tick the box and hit ok
Restart IE and select as deafult when prompted

NB. If same / similar message appears for firefox, just choose "NO"

How to do it????

by jrolanieto - 6/29/08 10:30 PM In reply to: Actually, you can. by everwanted2

I have read the message of EVERWANTED2 and I have interest to know
how I can do what he say. For me, his answer is very laconic, and I
am not computer technician but a understand a little about, but when
is relevant a something important as this what he said, I would like
to ask him if he can tell me exactly, step by step how to do it.. the
way he can delete IE and leave only Firefox 3, and see how the speed
improve.
I am using IE7, as default browser, and Firefox3 as ocasional. My OS is XP Home Edition, service pack 2. I want try your way. Thank you.

I STRONGLY advise against it...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 6/29/08 10:36 PM In reply to: How to do it???? by jrolanieto

1.) Removing Internet Explorer from your computer will NOT improve the computer's performance or the connection speed of Firefox. Thus, it serves no purpose to remove it.
2.) If you remove Internet Explorer you will not be able to access Windows Update, preventing you from readily downloading all future security and stability patches.
3.) If you remove Internet Explorer some of your third-party software, including your internet security suite, may no longer be able to download definition updates, leaving you exposed to new threats.
4.) If you remove Internet Explorer you will no longer be able to access/use some websites, including those of banks and online commerce services, which require Internet Explorer.

Thus, I STRONGLY advice against removing Internet Explorer.

John
