Flash and Flex are owned by Adobe who also owns much of the font technology. Until there is a browser, especially Firefox, that allows more fonts than available on the client computer, there will be an erosion as web app developers move to Flash and Flex. CSS2 and CSS3 give incredible power to XHTML/HTML with AJAX. I know it sounds frivolous to have embedded/linked fonts, but this has kept PDF alive and has wreaked usability and accessiblity.
Of course SMIL and SVG are important, but fonts are crucial. In the mean time as you build in font capability, at least let developers know that you will fix this major whole.
Daniel
this is an excellent point that hopefully we'll see addressed in other browsers that come out before FF4.
as far as PDFs go, i use foxit reader and have nothing but praise for it. i know there's a firefox extension that opens PDFs in a new tab, but i find that is sort of a resource vaccuum.

Thanks for that tweak utility. I have used it before but it doesn't make it that much faster. I tried using the TCP optimizer in Windows Vista and tried disabling the auto tuner but it doesn't work. Is there any other tweaking utilities to make it faster?
Thanks
Sounds like you're in the game of diminishing returns for increasing efforts. Assuming your hardware is fine, I'd live with what I got.
I've been trying to introduce my boss, who's suffered from and become stubborn in the ways Microsoft indoctrination, to Firefox. I can't even seem to get him to give Firefox any recognition. I do tech support here, and he refuses to let me install FF on a customer's computer who we know is not going to change their browsing habits. Have any suggestions on how to pitch FF for me and the rest of the tech support guys who frequent CNET?
Hmm. You could argue the merits: Speed, safety, better user experience.
You could challenge him to using it for a week.
You could use peer pressure (8 million download in 24 hours).
Or just let it go. Truth is, IE7 is not *bad*.
Is there a way to have two copies of firefox running simultaneously? (Especialy on the Mac.)
I need to use several currently unsupported add-ons.
for restoring incompatible add-ons, again check nightly tester tools or mr tech toolkit.

for running two installations concurrently on a mac, check out this little humdinger:

multi-firefox!
I have a really fast computer at least I think so and firefox seems to run slower than like IE7 or Opera. Is there any tweaks I could do to make Firefox faster.
Have not tried it, but here's a tweaking utility:

FF is fully adopted (almost!) on people loving "hi-tech" web. I mean, mostly users doesn't matter what browser they are using, and simply, they use IE.
What Mozilla can do to change this?
Thanks
IE comes with Windows. That's hard to beat, past court rulings notwithstanding.
If you wish to actually edit the cookies, and not just view/delete them, the extension EditCookies (http://editcookies.mozdev.org/) works with Firefox 3, though you may have to override the compatibility check.
John
I'm dyslexic and can't live without the Google Toolbar and its spell check. I hate the built in one. But spell check seems not to work with FF3. It check spelling but will not quit the checking interface.
What can I do? Is there anything else like it I can use on my Mac with FF3?
i'd recommend playing around with some of the spellchecking plug-ins available on the mozilla plugin site. if you find one that works well, please let me know so i can write about it!

In my home office, i've long ago replaced Internet Explorer with Firefox as the default (been using FF since 0.92 I believe.) However, do you believe it's now ready and waiting to take over the corporate office? I'd very much like to see FF on my office computer, I feel a lot safer.
It's a better platform for new Web apps. But there are still many corp apps that need IE.
Here at CNET, for example, our HR systems require IE. But our publishing systems are designed for Firefox! So we need both...
Many people have commented on FF2's video issues with flash. I've never had hem before but now I have them with FF3. Any ideas?
are they the same ones we've discussed today? if it's flash freezing, i'd recommend the flash 10 beta (link below). if that doesn't work, an ad-blocking plug-in might be the issue.
flash freezing:
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12548_102-0.html?forumID=136&threadID=298253&tag=forum.fd#answer_2799942
why should I even bother switching I mean I don't even get the difference
Repeating from earlier question:
It's faster and it's more secure.
And the new address bar, the "Awesome Bar" really is great for the occasional users.
It also has cool extensions, but casual users may not care about that.
Is there anyway for me to edit/change the cookies on firefox 3, they seem to be encrypted in some way
Go to FF3 options, privacy, show cookies.
FF3 has a completely new database structure that stores cookies, bookmarkts, history. It's much more robust and is being pitched as the core of some very cool new features: http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9904867-2.html
FF3 is asking me to add a plugin of windows media player 11(which I have), but last week the video worked fine with FF2. I have to manually do the plug and it still won't work. I have the same plug ins(ad block) that I did last week...the only change is FF3.
for re-activating old plugins, i wrote about the nightly tester tools.
http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-9974420-12.html
there's also the MR tech toolkit if you want something more robust.
I have found that many toolbars like ALOT and Zango can't be enabled on firefox3. Moreover, google accelerator is also disabled in this version.
but i'd suggest sending a note to the toolbar's publisher and asking them to upgrade.
Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
Happens from time to time. Go to Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del), processes tab, and kill the Firefox process. Or get Process Explorer: http://www.download.com/Process-Explorer/3000-2094_4-10223605.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10847734
Why can't I play some of the video from this site and from the yahoo site using firefox 3? Is this a problem everyone is having or just me. For example, when I wanted to watch the "Get the old address bar back in firefox 3" video, it doesn't load.
Ok so we know that FF3 is better than IE7. But some websites still do not support FF. IE is not very secure that is why I do not use it. Is there a way I can view these sites on FireFox.
IE Tab. i linked to it below.
http://www.download.com/IE-Tab/3000-11745_4-10857614.html
If you're running IE7 and it works for you, what are the most compelling reasons to make the switch to FF 3? What does it give you, as a casual user, that you didn't have before in IE7?
It's faster and it's more secure.
And the new address bar, the "Awesome Bar" really is great for the occasional users.
It also has cool extensions, but casual users may not care about that.
Has Googlegears been updated for FF3? It hadn't as of the last RC.
The extension FasterFox enables you to customize/maximize your Firefox connection while IE7Pro is a free third-party plug-in that includes a host of customizations, including a few that affect connection speed. Note that the effects are limited, though, based on your ISP.
John
IE7Pro is for IE
http://www.download.com/IE7Pro/3000-12777_4-10844454.html
personally, i don't see much reason to run IE7, and there's no reason for home users to not upgrade IE6 to 7. i use IE Tab
http://www.download.com/IE-Tab/3000-11745_4-10857614.html
to render IE7 pages.
as far as speeding up firefox, keeping extensions to a minimum is a good way to speed up cold boot times, but i've found page rendering to be extremely fast compared to anything else currently out there. keep in mind your CPU's stats might affect things.
of safari, IE7, or Firefox which is better for presentations; with the use of full screan
Opera, FF3, Safari are all better full-screen than IE7, since they handle zooming images better. However, bets are off if you're doing presentation of Flash elements. Then it's all up to Adobe.
Are there features that will make better AJAX applications or other types of web applications better, not just faster?
Firefox 3 supports that latest version of HTML. Also, it does better on the ACID compatibility tests than before: http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9970672-2.html
"by srosenblatt - 6/26/08 11:18 AMi wish i knew. i do have a solution for the embedded flash videos freeze after two seconds, if anybody wants to know."
I'm interested in that one.
John
just kidding. download the Flash 10 beta
http://www.download.com/Flash-Player/3000-2378_4-10856849.html
and then close your browser. uninstall Flash 9, then install Flash 10b, then restart your browser. let us know how that goes.
Which is the best browser keeping in mind security? firefox or IE7 or safari or opera?
It does a great job of warning you on phishing attacks and security certificate mismatches. Some users think it's too heavy-handed, though.
Is Firefox 3 faster for you than Firefox 2? Vote here: http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll/727263/
Hey guys,
Would Camino be better than Safari in some cases, or is it not a viable option?
I find that Flash under Firefox is very slow compared to IE, is there anything the programmers can do about this or is it an adobe flash problem? I have seen this behavior on Opera also.
i wish i knew. i do have a solution for the embedded flash videos freeze after two seconds, if anybody wants to know.
according to mozilla, ff3 was supposed to be faster and use less memory, from what ive experienced, i feel it is slower (pages take forever to load most of the time, and i know its not my connection) , and it takes about the same amount of memory...
will mozilla be doing something about this, or is this the way its going to stay?
Also, it's not so much about using less memory, but rather preventing memory *leaks*, which lead to slowdown over time and eventual crashes.
Seth and I are wondering: For people seeing FF3 being slower than FF2, are you on new or old PCs?
Why does FF3 no longer ask me about closing multiple tabs or remember which tabs I had open during the last session? I have these options enabled, but neither works. I rely heavily on both of these options, especially remembering open tabs.
Thanks!
rafe sez he's noticed the same bug, and i've heard this complaint from other people. i use the session manager plug-in and have never encountered this problem.
http://www.download.com/Session-Manager/3000-11745_4-10828937.html
Microsoft has said that IE8 is the most secure browser. But i feel that it is very slow! atleast on my system. If you have a strong computer do you think IE8 can replace FF3 ?
IE8 is still beta. Microsoft still has a chance to speed it up. Or not.
Do you know if there are plans to port the FF 3 engine then over into Flock and IceWeazel (which were alternate ports of FF to start with)?
It's in beta now. Flock 2.

Hey guys,
Is there a way to have firefox render text like safari and/or use webkit?
same answer as for a PC - depends on your needs as a user. baked in, go for safari. writing iphone apps, safari. like to do it your way, FF3.
Which is the best browser keeping in mind their downloading speed? I have found that firefox3 has slower downloading speed. Is firefox3 able to resume interrupted downloads?
But I still recommend DownThemAll. http://www.download.com/DownThemAll/3000-11745_4-10534942.html.
Seth also likes Download Status Bar.
Hey guys,
I know that the site hosts a number of controls to use in about:config in the new Firefox 3, such as shortening entries in the awesome bar, speeding up wait time, and deleting website entries. Any other about:config controls that you recommend that would be of use?

I know that there are so many awesome plugins and skins out there for FF3. Any suggestions? Plus, there still seems to be a compatibility issue with some from FF2. Is that set to be fixed?
I did a podcast on Firefox where I covered some of my faves. See episode 113 here: http://www.cnet.com/4520-12518_1-6491288-1.html
You'll have a lot of fun with PicLens. It's awesome.
FF2 plugins should be rewritten for FF3. The browser does a good job of updating them.

Have you looked at the Beta for IE8? How does it compare to Firefox? It IE the perennial loser here?
IE8 beta is definitely better than IE7, in terms of security and page rendering. however, it's not a stable version, and the new features have already been replicated in FF add-ons.
why does the new firefox 3 seem to take longer to load sites, and use up even more cpu than the last one? is it just because its still in beta?
...or is it just because i haven't found the options to max it out yet...
Make sure you have the latest, shipping version of FFox 3.
But I would not be surprised if there are still some issues for some people with this new version.
What Would you recommend, Safari or Firefox?
IE has the share, but Firefox is growing fast.
Along with Firefox opera has also released its new browser. I found both the same. But which do you think is more secure and more user-friendly.
honestly, at this point i think that which one you use depends on how you like your browser. if you like to roll your own favored features into it, firefox is the way to go. if you like everything baked in, opera is the stronger choice.
Hi, Rafe Needleman here. I'm sitting with Seth Rosenblatt from Download.com, and we're going to try to answer your questions about Firefox 3. So fire away. Oh, and don't forget to check out our Firefox 3 resource page at http://www.cnet.com/firefox-3/
