Netscape & Netscape Mail

by RoyalBlueBear - 6/21/08 1:09 AM

I have read that AOL, that bought Netscape is no longer going to be improving Netscape brand software not long ago. It might be old news but just finding it out. They have not even tried to update the mail browser part. They have with the internet browser in the past. I heard they have their own with firefox extensions to a new browser and mail browser that they now call Flock. Can anyone tell me if this browser is any good and can it import my bookmarks and e-mail?

It's a nice browser...

Indeed, Netscape announced several months ago that they were terminating support for their browser and suggesting users switch to Flock. Flock is based on Firefox, my browser of choice, with a primary difference being integrated social networking support/features. Both are good and can import your bookmarks, but note that neither has an e-mail client integrated. (Netscape had phased that out too.) Thus, you'll need to use Windows Live Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird for that functionality.

Hope this helps,
John

Which Is Better And How Do I Do It?

I hate to manually add each and every bookmark I have. As far as my e-mail and folders they are in, I want to keep their original date it was received. I do have Windows Mail on my Vista computer but I can't seem to get it to import from Netscape 4.79. So of both that you mentioned, which is better? If I wanted to backup my mail, which I do that manually cause I know where the folder is for my e-mail and bookmarks are kept.

That all depends...

-> Firefox is better if you like to add a lot of functionality. (Reduced number available.) Flock is better if you prefer to have social networking capabilities built in. Both are equally good, depending on who you ask.

-> You will be prompted to import all of IE's bookmarks during installation...no additional legwork needed.

-> What email account(s) (services such as Hotmail, Comcast, etc.) do you have? If the messages are left on the server, the easiest way would be to simply set up the e-mail client...no imports would be necessary. Regardless, I'd use either Windows Live Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird, not Windows Mail. (The latter is being 'replaced' by WLM.)

I Have....

I do not have e-mail accounts with those that give e-mail addresses for free. I have mine through my ISP, BellSouth. I also use Mcafee. It does not work too well with Netscape 4.79 because can't use it for other features. That is also a factor as to what mail browser and internet browser to use. One that would be easy to import bookmarks and mail that will work with McAfee without having to do every bookmark and e-mail without losing the original date that the e-mail came in.

I Found Out Who He Is

The guy I was referring to that I saw the video was Seth Rosenblatt, Associate editor on CNET TV talking about the first look from the labs on Firefox 3 on the CNET TV website. He has a small and lightly thin goatee with, what looks like curly hair, and I said he is white, curley dark hair wearing a black t-shirt with a drawing of a Transformer on his shirt. I wonder if he would know?
