After installing Norton AntiVirus software I experienced difficulty accessing the Internet through my dsl modem via sbcglobal.net. I contacted an SBC technician who was no help; kept trying. Happened to get a tech who had researched and solved the problem. He said that Norton Virus software contains a function that interferes with my modem connection. He gave me a solution but unfortunately it is clumsy and somewhat difficult for me to understand and explain. I have to use the "run" cmd feature and reset and reboot each time I have a connection problem. Certainly I cannot be the only one out here who has an sbcglobal dsl connection along with Norton Antivirus software. I tried to reach Symantec but gave up in frustration. Anybody else out there have this problem? have a solution?
Just get rid of Norton. I use Trend Micro and it is the best and causes no problem. I think its the best AntiVirus/System Protection. You can't go wrong with it!!!
Let me knows how it goes or if you have any more problems!!!
I had connection problems just as you discribed. I was told by tech support to disable my Norton. That worked, but of course I didn't want to be without protection. I downloaded the free version of Zone Alarm & have not had problems related to it. I still get connection problems from time to time, but these seem to be related to SBC and not Zone Alarm.
Thank you for posting this. For the record, unfortunately I have just experienced the same issue with the same 2 vendors (Symantec, and SNET). I am fairly technical, but solution not obvious. Support was equally unhelpful.
Install a router such as...
dsl modem -> router -> pc
Then the dsl login happens on the router and from router to pc is just a lan connection which can be simpler.
Best of luck,
Bob
Dump it and use zone alarm or any of the better ones listed on this site. My local computer shop will not sell norton.
I was working on a clients PC. They experianced the same issue with sbcyahoo dsl and norton antivirus. The way to get around this is to turn the internet worm protection off. What I would like to know is why Norton's internet worm protection is suddenly blocking sbcyahoo dsl?
I talked to SBC Technical Support on 08/05/2007 regarding this very issue. My connection is fine until I start downloading files larger than 20MB, or similar usage. The tech support guy had me disable Norton and that seemed to fix the problem. His recommendation was to get a different antivirus. To me, that's not an option. I've used Norton for years and wouldn't have anything else. I guess the better solution would be to ditch SBC and get another carrier.
Does anyone have a solution yet? I can't find anything on Norton's website that could fix the problem.

Wow, I thought I found some new information but I notice these posts are old! My problem with Norton and SBC just started because Norton is now their free antivirus protection program. I've had nothing but sluggish startups and hangups and other weird connection issues since I installed it a week ago. I used Norton in the past and always had problems. I never had problems with their old protection programs. I could find very little on Norton on the SBC Help desk. Anyone else having this problem? I sent them an e-mail. sorry, just venting!
Norton is a resource hog. Over the years, Norton has had mixed reviews, depends who you talk to. I had Norton in 2001 & 2002 and liked it. In 2003 I switched to AVG FREE. Liked that one also. I am now currently using Avast(also FREE).
The version of Norton that you are using, Does it have a firewall?. If you use Norton's firewall, you should not be using Windows firewall. Two firewall conflict with each other.
My sister has Comcast and they also offer FREE virus protection. They have McAfee. I downloaded Avast for her instead. I found that Avast has a pretty good real time scanner.
If you have a problem with Norton and SBC(now ATT) feel free to make a new discussion on the matter and someone will try to help you out.
I know for a fact that att.net block certain types of emails. I have a friend that I was emailing and I gave up because of att.net blocking policy. My suggestion for you is to get a FREE email account somewhere. Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail are FREE. I like Gmail the best, but that's up to you.
Good Luck and Welcome to the forum
Rick
I am a fairly new subscriber to SBC DSL. I sign up to it last spring.
I am using the DSL gateway from 2wire as my DSL modem/router. I have
been using Norton Systemworks along with Anti-Virus on my machine.
I have an older computer that is running Windows 2000. I DO NOT have
problems connecting or downloading from the Internet.
i fix people's computers as a part time job and i just fixed this exact problem last week. just uninstall Norton and install AVG Anti Virus. it will not only not mess with your connection, but it will make your computer run faster. it runs with less RAM than Norton and will not drag your system down.
I hope this fixes your problem.
I'm guessing the issue is resolved by now.
Interestingly enough though, AT&T (which bought SBC after this question was posted) offers free Norton Antivirus to its DSL customers, so you'd assume that the software they are providing is compatible with the hardware they are providing. Or maybe I'm being naive. ![]()
