Check my temps and hardware status.

by TrackStar1682 - 6/21/08 8:41 AM In reply to: Poll: What do you do when your PC's performance deteriotes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Anti-virus/spyware/adware, disk defragmenter, clean up, OS and driver updates are all automatic, I only use the programs I need, and I won't touch registry cleaners, so since the software side of things is always up to snuff on my machine, it could only be a hardware issue, which is where checking up on my hardware status and temps comes in. If things are running too hot or somehing looks like it's about to fail, then it probably is.

I progressively eliminate any software issues that aren't solved automatically as they pop up, so that only leaves the mechanical aspect of things to look at. If it's not a mechanical problem, and I've ruled out all software issues and things are still just not right, a reinstallation of Windows is usually in order, which for me is quick and easy.

What is the first thing you do when your computer's performa

by jrwooton - 6/21/08 9:34 AM In reply to: Poll: What do you do when your PC's performance deteriotes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

-- Run an antivirus application (Why?)
-- Run antispyware/adware applications (Why?)
-- Run a disk defragmenter utility (Why?)
-- Run a disk clean up utility (Why?)
-- Run a registry cleaner (Why?)

OK, I have a program that provides me a choice of all of these and more...It's call System Mechanic and is the best one for the job...especially for Vista...it also has a the capability to defrag the registry and clean and compress the hives...I definitely see a difference after a busy day of playing games and other heavy resource eating programs...I also run uniblue registry cleaner 2.0 also...because System Mech doesn't seem to catch all the registry issues. System Mech also has a great defragging tool and if you have a lot of defragged files and a huge drive...I have 2 300 gig drives...it will take time so be prepared to walk away and let the drives defrag....also with this program it comes with a Firewall and Antivirus tools too....and I have not had a single virus or Firewall issue either....well thanks for letting me rant..I hope this helps...

I have a dual core 3.0 gig and 2 gigs of ram and a 2 gig flash disk for readyboost...1 320g IDE and 1 300g SATA and 512 mb video...Vista Ultimate...

performance

by SerengetiValley - 6/24/08 11:48 AM In reply to: What is the first thing you do when your computer's performa by jrwooton

My XP/Vista systems' performance does not deteriorate, even after months of heavy duty usage. I keep it clean and simple.
-No unnecessary programs
-Only stable and reliable programs installed
-Keep the systems malware free...use Opera for browsing, and run regular spyware/anti-virus scans.
-keep the drives defragmented. I use an automatic defragmenter that maintains all the drives in top shape all the time. I don't need to waste time defragging via schedules.
-Have sufficient RAM and fast HDDs, hardware-wise.
-keep the drivers updated. Mainly applies to video drivers, and for the gaming dekstop.
-keep the hardware in good shape...clean and well ventilated case with a good power supply unit.

Check the files in Program Files

by Harriepoes - 6/21/08 4:46 PM In reply to: Poll: What do you do when your PC's performance deteriotes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Ever since my pc slowed down rather sudden and very severe and I discovered in Program Files, in the map Real, not only RealPlayer, but also RealArcade, for which I had never asked and what had been put on my pc when I "updated" RealPlayer and after removal of that RealArcade-thing my pc was about twice as fast as before, I always look in Program Files for unknown items when I get the idea that the performance of my pc is deteriorating. And far too often I indeed find something for which I haven't asked.

My slow down problems have had different cause

by hikergirl - 6/21/08 5:27 PM In reply to: Poll: What do you do when your PC's performance deteriotes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The first time I had a real problem was after IE7 was installed. I didn't know it was the problem until after I contacted the company that sold me the computer. As soon as I reinstalled IE6, no more problems. Until some time later, that is. Now it's usually Firefox. Microsoft has been badgering me to update and install SP3 (for XP w/SP2). Even after four hours, the installation had not occurred. I bit the bullet and went after the foreign stuff that had been down-
loaded. After I did my homework, on CNET.com, of course, I found there had been 10 bulletins just preceding SP3's release. Since I know pretty much nothing about software and hardware, I am so glad CNET.com is around to protect me from making huge mistakes. And, I turned off Automatic Updates and am notified before allowing them. So, if it isn't Firefox, it's a Microsoft problem that gets reported.

Computer Performance Slows Down

by nomadd74 - 6/21/08 6:04 PM In reply to: Poll: What do you do when your PC's performance deteriotes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Since I have had my Apple computer Mac Os X 10.5.2 Leopard Desktop I have had no slow downs. I never defrag, look for spam, nor viruses. Everything is working perfectly!
However, I do not keep downloads that are unnecessary. For instance any music downloads are quickly converted to disc, that is, any I wish to keep. Otherwise delete all.
I am very wary of new gimic improvements that clutter the computer, if the computer is working well, why bother to download registry checks and many other so called improvements?
In the past having tried many of these I now prefer to leave them well alone and off my computer.
My experience finds that keeping your hard drive quite empty ensures your computer runs well. Too many people download and never clean out, just like cleaning out your email files, and internet addresses.
Number one practice - delete - delete and delete all the time. After all why do you keep these of date downloads?

If XP slows down, I head for the pits

by yarlq - 6/22/08 1:31 PM In reply to: Poll: What do you do when your PC's performance deteriotes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Since I keep a tight regimen of defenses and online reviews, not to mention registry cleaning and defragging and dumping junk programs and trashing .tmp files, etc. ...

... when my computer starts to slow or respond slowly, I know it's Windoze about to upchuck another hair ball.

Except this last time (right now) - it <shutdown> like a real OS but when I powered up next morning: the dreaded BSOD!

Not just any BSOD but a Fatal System Error pre-boot Kiss your C-drive bye-bye and screw you very much as we at WinDoze know that certain updates will BSOD XP SP3 and tough doo-doo when they do.

(A MS field guy wrote 'there is no way to fix this'. So far he's right - except that I can boot into Linux and recover my D-drive files. It's now Penguin 248565 to Windoze 0.)

So, boys and girls, if you have to use WinDoze, back up back up back up - you can't do it often enough.

And get to know Linux - my dual-boot saved my butt again. If it wasn't for Linux, I'd have no way to go online while Windoze is having yet another hissy-fit.

No wonder Gates has gone as far from MS as he can - I'd be hugely embarrassed at taking so much money for such a lousy product and wasting so many buyers' time!

What do I do when my computer slows down.

by willisjohn - 6/22/08 11:14 PM In reply to: Poll: What do you do when your PC's performance deteriotes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Well, to begin with I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 with 8gig of memory and a quad 4 CPU It is blazing fast and I have been running it since Jan. It has not slowed down, but I keep all cookies cleaned out on shut down and I have Panda running anti virus on shut down and anti spyware on startup. I have the computer shut down automatically after the anti virus scan and I restart it when I get ready to work. When I ran win xp it was a different story. On slow down I cleaned the hard drive of all un necessary clutter, ie, cookies temp files and such. Checked for file fragments and if necessary defragged. Panda was my saving grace on my xp machnines also. Knock on wood, never had a virus and very few if any spyware. Ran reg cleaner on one of my xp machine and hosed it so, I have not used them anymore. Basically I insure if I remove any software from my computer I search the registry and remove all traces from it. Love Vista and the 64 bit capabilities of it. Stay fast and love it.

Run anti-virus

by LunchMeat - 6/23/08 4:18 PM In reply to: Poll: What do you do when your PC's performance deteriotes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Actually, I do all of the above, but I run the antivirus first.
Why? Well, first I must say that it's not my PC, but my daughter's. I have learned to ignore this machine until she says "Dad, my computer sucks! Everything takes forever!"
I then tell her I will have a look next time I have a chance. Usually I wait two or three days; it's not a good idea to be too responsive in these cases. I then run antivirus software to get rid of the Trojans and Downloaders, usually there are two or three of these, and then all the other programs (anti-spyware, registry cleaner, etc.) and then Revo Uninstaller to get rid of this week's copy of LimeWire...

Pop-Ups

by hikergirl - 6/26/08 12:36 PM In reply to: POP UPS by ma4ch1

If you are using a Windows-based product, I would report that information to them. I am very illiterate when it comes to computers, but I, too, have had strange messages showing up every now and then. Microsoft needs to know about them - it gives them something practical to do.
