PC vs. Mac

by joe23amdg - 6/21/08 1:28 PM

I will be attending college in the fall and majoring in Biology. Would a Mac or PC be better choice for this major?

I have a Mac

I'm a biology major as well. I don,t use much school related software that would incline me to think that the OS compatibility should be a major concern.

I had a desktop pc and was happy with it. when i moved into my dorm and i started looking for laptops AND i settled for a macbook and i am happy with it as well.
I was lucky and my printer, mp3 and camara are all compatible with my new laptop but consider how much hardware u already own and how much of it will be compatible with mac OSX

Ask the faculty what software you may need

Find out whether the biology program requires that you use any Mac- or Windows-specific software. If you absolutely have to run Windows, it's better to just get a Windows notebook (I prefer Dell's XPS M1330 or a Lenovo ThinkPad T-series).

If you have your choice of platform, I'd go Mac if just for the conveniences (instant sleep/wake, less need for security software, and so on). A 13-inch MacBook would be ideal unless you need high-performance gaming.

But wait until August before you buy! Every computer builder, including Apple, is likely to have updates in August once Intel updates its notebook platform at the same time. Word has it that the MacBook will switch from plastic to aluminum and may have other features, so it won't just be a speed bump.

Macbook is awesome

That you're asking PC or Mac suggests that pricing isn't too big of a deal.

A Macbook would be a great laptop for students of pretty much any major. Heck, a Macbook Pro (15.4") would be nice too.

But, strictly speaking, for the student side of your life, basically any Windows laptop on the market will handle the job, too.

With Windows you'll have to deal with security. Especially the student limewire+myspace lifestyle, you'd want to buy a top quality antivirus (e.g., Kaspersky). And a Windows machine won't come with the nifty iLife software a Mac does. So there's a higher software cost of living with Windows.

But

In terms of price, the cheapest Macbook is around $1100, compared half that price for a capable Windows laptop.
