Solution

by bevillan - 6/18/08 7:52 AM In reply to: Suspected Intentional Home Audio Interference by trailuser

Usually I don't recommend physical threats, but I wonder if the interference would stop if you threaten to 'do' something to your neighbor if the problem doesn't stop.

No one messes with the alpha male.

I agree.

Honestly? I think you are just in a bad spot and are in a location where all your electronics are just going goofy on ya. You should find a 1-800 number for Roswell and have them come and look at your property.
I also agree with bearvp though. I don't think that puting the fear of God in someone is a crime. (If you do it right :))

exactly

Usually if I have a neighbor that is pissing me off lately I'll decide to pack up my assault rifle and pistol to go shooting when they are outside so they can see my hardware. Usually they stop bothering me when they see the heat.

Gosh, this sure brings out conspiracy plots & romanticized

notions of militaristic violence. My city certainly has banned any civilian use of firearms within the city limits & we encompass well over 100 square miles of mostly empty desert. Deeply creased arroyos provide easy safety of aim as to ricochets, but the law is the law.

I'd suggest some knowledgeable survey of the premises by an electrician who knows well the consequences of oscilloscope examination. If your residence has particularly poor grounding, youy could be generating an enormous mass of elecrtrical "fuzz."

Shouldn't that sort of analysis be done before planning & plotting dire consequences which are way over the line?

Of course...

this is all in good fun. No ones serious. Except for the intial poster that can't enjoy his home entertainment. That sucks and is a very serious matter.

Right, except for the police, courts and lawyers. The threat of physical violence to someone is for the braindead and not a way to a successful resolution

Ask a ham for help

by BassBinDevil - 6/20/08 8:23 PM In reply to: Suspected Intentional Home Audio Interference by trailuser

Contact a local ham radio club, and maybe a member or two will come over and help you out in exchange for a donation to the club, or a pizza.

Or, get a very basic broadband signal detector (maybe sold as a bug detector), and see if the RF field strength goes up when your neighbor is around.

It could possibly be coincidence; radio waves travel much further at night, so it is possible that distant radio stations are causing interference with the ones you listen to. Because of that, radio stations are usually required to reduce power, so that could be another factor.

having "fun" with HAM...

This is how bad things can get sometimes between neighbors.... not for little kids

If my neighbor is in fact using a low power FM transmitter to overwhelm my FM reception, would I be seeing a high amplitude signal at the frequency I am trying to listen to (96.1 mhz) as I monitor with my spectrum analyzer and a scanner antenna, or would this jamming signal be appearing at some other frequency I need to look for? Again, I don't actually hear any other radio transmissions over my systems, just repetitious minor sound level reductions and returns to normal, sometimes most distressingly, extended total cut off, or occasionally a rapid spike in volume of the music I was listening to. These don't occur all day but only at select times coinciding with my neighbor's presence. Any further thoughts to help me zero-in on the most likely way my reception is being "attacked" - RF transmission, electrical power, other? Thanks.

Well there will be a spike at the frequency where the radio station is broadcasting, from the station itself. What you want to look for is, when you experience fading or total signal loss, if the spike at this frequency gets larger, or another spike occurs somewhere on the spectrum analyzer that coincides with the interference, then you can be fairly sure that it is an outside source which is causing the problem.

One thing before everyone gets too far, just because your neighbor may have something that is causing interference does not mean that it is intentional or that he is even aware of it. Plenty of devices are made with poor shielding these days and leak RF energy. Don't be too quick to condemn the guy. I know you mentioned haveing a "history" with him, but making accusations of intentional jamming won't help your relationship, especially if they aren't true.

Has the cause been narrowed to RFI?

by punterjoe - 6/27/08 3:26 AM In reply to: Another reply by trailuser

I remember reading about problems with CD playback too. It seems unlikely that there would be much RF interference could do to that. Could it be some IR interference? Do the receivers have wireless remotes? I've had trouble with this in the past - in my case poorly designed "dim-able" (pulsing) CFL fixtures causing some previously well behaved electronics to "go nuts" with symptoms similar to trailuser's Not only would volume levels change - sometimes my TV would turn itself on ...at maximum volume! Covering the IR sensor stopped the seemingly spontaneous behavior - and of course made nothing controllable (grin) but at least it helped pinpoint the trouble.
I don't want to sidetrack the RFI discussion. I just want to be sure the IR remote issue is off the table before we gradually turn trailuser's home into a giant Faraday cage :)

I'm having a new neighbor problem, too.

by jacky9j - 7/13/08 1:07 AM In reply to: Suspected Intentional Home Audio Interference by trailuser

I have new neighbors and he is also a ham radio operator. We live up in the mountains in a rural town and since I only live up there seasonal I never got cable installed. So I have an antenna on my roof and I get probably 6 channels. And the first words out of his mouth when I met him was, "I hope I don't cause any interuptions with your TV, because I do ham radio". Since I know zilch about ham radio operation I didn't think much of it. Not until my outside motion detector lights kept coming on and staying on and my other neighbors lights would come on exactly the same time mine did. Also, every morning I blow dry my hair, well it seems that I have to hit the reset switch on the cord to make it work. I didn't think much about this either, but the other night I heard a noise coming from the bathroom and sure enough it was the electrical cord, reseting by itself. Weird! So now I have just begun to research and get myself familiar with this stuff, so that I can have solid printed out info to show him how his hobby is disrupting my appliances. And to prove how cocky this guy is, he installed his big giant pole, I guess it's the antenna maybe, on the other side of my fence and another one on his shed. Is this the stuff your referring to when you say that you need proof? Also, will my electric bill run higher because of this?

Thanks

How exactly is this guy being cocky? He saw your antenna and not only informed you that he was a ham radio operator but said that he hopes he doesn't cause you any interference. As far as having antennas in his yard, it is a requirement of the hobby. Would he also be cocky if he enjoyed motorcycles and had one or two in the yard?

One of the biggest problems with neighbors who are experiencing interference is that in many cases they will not say anything or do anything except get mad and talk behind the back of the person who is causing it. Your new neighbor already expressed his concern that he might cause interference for you, so go tell him what is happening. You can't expect it to stop if he doesn't know its occuring.

I am a ham and I have had the circuit breaker plugs like the one on your blow dryer buzz and trip when I transmit. I have not heard of the motion lights coming on, but it is certainly possible. The only thing that would run your electric bill up is if the lights are on all night.

Again, tell him. You don't need to assume he will be defensive or resistive to doing anything about it. You don't need to build a case against him. Just explain the problem to him and in all likelyhood he will be more than happy to work with you to fix the problems. Sometimes small filters can be put on appliances that experience problems, or simple things can be done which will make both people happy, for instance: You unplug your hair dryer when you aren't using it and he agrees not to transmit between 7 and 8am when you dry your hair. Sometimes reducing the power output of his radios or moving an antenna can solve the problems too.

If you have any questions, please post them. Also let us know how you make out with this problem.
