Looking for HDD Camcorder For Under $600
by bugm3n0t - 6/11/08 5:29 PMi went to a ton of review sites and stuff and mainly i found that the good, non-hd, hdd cams were JVC (GZ-MG360, GZ-MG330, GZ-MG155, GZ-MG130) i think the 360's the best one from those and its about $500-600
but im still not sure cuz some say sonys are good, some canon, JVC panasonic, etc.
so basically, wut im looking for is a cam thats got a 30GB+ hdd, non-hd, 20x+ optical zoom would be nice, some good extra features, a light would be nice, its still-picture taking skills dont matter much, good battery, good lens, and having built-in windscreen & zoom mic would be great
also, if anyone knows whether or not the JVC GZ-MG360 has a windscreen and zoom mic, please reply her

I'd stick with Sony or Panasonic. Check out www.camcorderinfo.com.

the thing i dont like with Sony is that there under $600 camcorders dont have a light built in, but wut do u think i should get between say the JVC MG-360 and the Sony DCR-SR46 and why?

Also, many people have complained on here about the image quality. JVCs optics aren't as refined as Sony. By the way, a built-in light won't be that beneficial in most situations. In some cases where the subject is 3 to 5 feet away, it might help a bit.
To be honest, if you spend a bit more and go with a 60 series or 80 series, you'll like the better quality video. Those have an upgraded sensor.

the Canon Vixia HF10 and Canon HG10 seem to be good but the HF10 has only 16GB of flash memory space, which seems a little low to me for its price.
the Panasonic ones that are highly rated dont have internal memory, and the highest ones are rated below the Sony HDRSRs.
So i guess its between Sony and Canon then right??
so which one would you recommend??

I know when flash used as a SSD in computers, it gives a boost in read/write performance, but that shouldn't be a big issue in a camcorder. However, it is much more durable than a hard drive. For anyone wanting a durable HD camcorder, the HF10 is a very good option. It also has room for extra expansion space.
The HG10 is hard drive based. Of course, hard drives are much cheaper per GB than are flash drives so that it is the reason you get much more storage for around the same price.
I've heard mostly good things about Panasonic. They recently released a few new HD camcorders, one being a dual SD/HDD option which is very convenient, the HS9. (Check it out at camcorderinfo.)
The Sony SR series is up with the mix. Nothing really outstanding to say about them except that they take great HD video and include features rarely found on consumer camcorders. Still a good option.
It's really up to you between those options. All will serve you well. FYI, all use AVCHD to record video which means if you will be editing, you need software that can handle that type of video. Some software that does support it include: Sony Vegas, Pinnacle, Corel, iMovie, Final Cut.

In 200 there is CMOS lense but not in 220 and build-in-light is missing in 200 and available in 220. One gives better quality picture and second option favours the situation in night time recording. As you asked, I would prefer to keep tapes and dvd camcoder off the list because this is another kind of pain.
Can you please advice me with the specific reasons for your suggestions. I would like to know and understand them better to decide.
