Thanks to the recomendations on this board I will be going with a pc monitor for my PS3 using a HDMI/DVI connection.
What are my options for sound and speakers?
It sounds like I can use the component audio cables but where can I plug them into?
Are there speakers that will hook directly up to the PS3?
Will I need a separate receiver for the speakers?
Will the integrated speakers on a monitor connect to PS3?
Please share any similar set ups that you have.
Thanks
There is no such thing as component audio, only component video. Audio is typically either composite (analog) or SPDIF (digital). HDMI has a DRM garbage encumbered digital audio component to it, so that's one option.
The important thing to ask here, is whether or not you care about having surround sound, or if you're content with plain stereo.
If all you want is stereo, it shouldn't be too difficult. Virtually any speaker set will do. You may need a few adapters from Radio Shack, such as a composite to RCA headphone, and then possibly a gender changer for the RCA headphone cable. If you can find speakers that have composite hookups, so much the better.
If you want surround sound, you'll need to find a surround receiver unit first. You'll want to make sure it has some kind of digital input, either digital coax and/or optical TOSLINK. I'm not sure on the exact nature of the various output ports on the PS3, but assuming it has a TOSLINK port like the PS2 did, you just need a TOSLINK cable to connect it to the surround receiver.
Don't be fooled by people either. TOSLINK cable is TOSLINK cable. There's no significant difference between say a $50 Monster brand cable, and some $10 thing you might find away from all the home theater stuff. Almost everyone who says that, is someone who works on commission. There's also no such thing as a TOSLINK cable that only works with the PS3 or the Xbox 360, or anything else like that. It's just a marketing gimmick to try and jack up the prices. A high quality receiver is FAR more important than a high quality cable. Any good receiver will have circuitry to filter out any little bits of noise that might be introduced from lower quality cables.
If you want more specifics on this, you'll need to find exactly what kind of ports are on the back of the PS3, and then figure out a solution on your own. It really is the best way, since you are then familiar with all the intimate details of what went into it.
I recommend you go to the sony site, go here for further help...

if the above link loves you enough to actually work, then you choose certain options for a surround sound system or stereo system, and it inputs your options to choose the best speakers for you. SOME of the stuff from sony actually COMES with a reciever, just be careful if it doesn't!
What I meant by "be careful if it doesn't come with reciever" is if you already don't have one, then your speakers you just bought are rendered useless.
