I have my PS3 hook up to my tv using an HDMI cable, picture and sound are good. I also have it hooked up to my receiver using an OPTICAL cable. The question I have is do I always have to go into the menu/settings to switch it to HDMI when I want to hear it without the receiver on then go back into menu/settings to switch it back to OPTICAL when I want to hear it with the receiver on??
You didn't tell us if you've tried it both ways!
So, go into the menu/settings and switch it to HDMI and play something with sound. Turn up the volume on the TV. Can you hear it OK as usual? Now, turn down the TV volume and turn up the volume on the receiver. Can you hear it through the speakers? If so, you're all set. If not, try it the other way around. Go into the menu/settings and select OPTICAL. Now check if the sound works when you turn up the TV volume. Again, if both are working leave it set like this.
If neither method works then, yes, you must switch from HDMI to OPTICAL each time.
It's either one way (optical/hdmi) or the other.
