Firefox Lite?

by dgc49 - 6/9/08 5:40 PM

I agree that Firefox is a nice browser that is fast most of the time, but lite on resources, I find that depends on the web page you are accessing. I use both Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 6 running on Windows XP Home Edition with SP1. Firefox gives me features that Internet Explorer 6 doesn't, but one problem I have run into constantly with Firefox is that it use a lot more memory than Internet Explorer 6 does. Almost double in fact. Also on some webpages I access, the size of the browser keeps getting bigger and bigger while my usable memory keeps getting smaller eventually causing my system to slow down. I've noticed that my virtual memory also keeps getting larger at the same time. I've sent emails to Mozilla about this and no one has responded back to me about this problem. The only way I've found to fix the problem is to shut down Firefox for about 30 seconds to allow Windows to clear out the memory. Then restart Firefox again. I have to do this about every 60 minutes.
This pretty much shoots down the idea that Firefox is lite on resources.

Light?

A week or so ago we were told that the new version is STILL a resource hog & everybody should wait for RC3 although the prospect of the development team being able to make Firefox use less memory was slim, indeed. Today, Firefox floats like a butterfly, soars like an eagle and gets 100 mpg. Which is right?

Robert Vamosi writes that FF is now "light on resources". Well, it depends of what he calls "light". I just checked, after opening my 16th Tab for this forum and while I'm writing this, FF gobbles up 223.614 K, according to Task Manager and is still growing (3 Min. ago, just before I started writing, it read 212.192). That's a big chunk out of my 1GB of memory (and no, I'm not going to upgrade this "old" P4 1.7 with costly SDRAM memory!). I still do favour FF over IE8, but, for once, MS is definitely lighter on Memory resources. Also just now CPU load varies between 02 and 59, but I never checked IE on that one.
So, to make me completely happy, Mozilla should do some more intensive workouts on this issue although I admit there is a definite improvement over 2.0 which was not afraid to go well over 300.000K...
