Well, what might be the gender of someone called "esthersummerson"..?
Esther sounds like 'she' to me - but I could be wrong. (John Waynes original name was Marion Morrison, so names can be tricky..)
Have you noticed how the entertainment just keeps on rolling after our "step-back-and-have-a-look" posts?

First upgrade to at least 1GB of RAM
128MB is barley enough to run most PCs thease days.
When upgrading your RAM get rid of the 128MB chip and replace it with a 1GB memory chip (If you are not sure how to do this get your local computer shop to help you)
After that you should have it better but we have not finished...
Next uninstall avast! follow the instructions and if it asks you to reboot your PC do so and even if it does not.
Now replace avast with a FREE anti virus program that also has FREE anti spyware with it AND EVEN A FREE website checker...............
Its AVG 8!
You can download it here: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?tag=pop.software&cdlPid=10834624
100% free.....................................................
Also use ATF Cleaner
The original poster stated the he/she has "Memory (RAM) 1280 MB" - NOT 128 MB. It might be a good idea to carefully read the post before dispensing advice.
As far as your your advice regarding AVAST is concerned: While the original poster did not specify which version he/she is running - the "Home version" of AVAST is free as well so switching to AVG does not save any money. (And it most certainly doesn't address the problem)
And I thought I was a beginner....
I did read the original post, and you're correct, they did say they have 1280 memory (and I said I have 256, which is about 5 times less memory than they do). I fail to see your point. If they have that much more memory than I do, they should be running about 500 percent more efficiently than I am. I am using the free version of Avast! As I stated... I have no problems with my version on my PC. My clock spped is also half of what theirs is.
I give Avast4 a five star rating! I'm proud to be an Avast user!
Why switch to AVG when what I'm using satisfies my needs well.
Besides that, I did try to download AVG, and every site I went to seemed to indicate AVG was no longer free. The one site that offered a free version of said program (incidentally, this was before I went to Avast), upon completion of the download and attempting to install AVG, the installation file was corrupt.
As stated, I have to rely on dialup service because of my limited income... Can you imagine how long it took me to download the corrupt copy of AVG using dial-up service?
Avast4 appears to be a top-notch antivirus program in my book! I believe I'll dance with the one that brought me here (in this event, it appears to be a discussion of Avast and it's performance.
As for the prior reply, I also stated that (in my limited experience) I have noticed that other programs I have installed in the past have (on occasion) interfered with other programs I already have. Sometimes this is because they are trying to access the same address as the other program. I mentioned this because the person having difficulty with Avast may be experiencing this same type of interference.
How much more carefully would you suggest I read before I make an intelligent reply?
Whenever a post like this goes a bit off topic due to someone misreading or having no idea what was said and needs clarification, please don't get offended and feel like you have to apologize for the learning process. We are all "learning" even if it's about how to speak to others in a kind way and not put them down.
However, there are a few geeks, and I can be one of them at times, that get so caught up in being "right" that they don't put into perspective how the "other" person might feel about being chastised over grammar or even a few "0's".
Chalk this one up to one of those occasions and let it be.
This post, or so I thought, was to help out a "person" (no gender discussion here) fix something that needed to be fixed.
I am guilty of professing Avast's excellence simply because I have had experience with other programs that DO NOT work as well.
But maybe we all should "agree" that this is not a bash on other programs, or the AVAST forum banner ad to vent our own opinions about the multitude of options out there to choose from.
It's hard enough when trying to get rid of Malware, as we all should know, to come and go from this forum without any real answers as to how to fix the problem.
To reiterate what I said in my previous reply, go to MajorGeeks.com and the Removing Malware forum. They will tell you to down load a few programs that you may already have and post your results to the "experts" that will tell you exactly upon gleaning your reports, what needs to be done to your computer.
Don't forget to tell them that you have already posted discussions regarding your problem elsewhere and what you have already done to try and get your computer back so that they will have an accurate place to start with your situation. ONLY POST ON ONE FORUM so that you don't get too many people telling you what to do that "may" be more harmful to your computer.
Unfortunately, not everyone in these forums have your best interest at heart. That might sound cruel and not meant to offend anyone that has put in good info during this forum. However, we don't really know who the heck anyone is over the internet and going with a viable company that has a reputation of great service is always the best bet.
Personally, I have saved many a computer with the help of the Major Geek Squad and SpyBot search and destroy malware forums as well. :')
So, choose wisely before installing, uninstalling and deleting. Don't "surf" the net logged in as "owner" or "administrator" create a user id that DOES NOT have administrator rights so that your core won't be at such a risk. And before you run ANYTHING use the Avast pre-scanner and make sure it's not infected. Run 1 Anti-Virus, 1 Malware program and 1 Microsoft repair on your computer at one time. Using multiple programs may cause breaches in the programs so that something can slip through.
Once you get your computer back to normal, run a Hijack this log and get familiar with it. You will learn a lot going through the process you are in. Be careful however of the old saying, "a little knowledge is just enough to be dangerous". Once you become more familiar with your processes and Hkey's etc, you will know when you need another tune up for your computer. Like any working electrical item, cars included, you need to take care of it with regular maintenance and unfortunately fix it when it gets a boo boo...
Enough said, (maybe too much for some, lol) cheers to you all!
I am a disabled individual who recently bought a used PC. It's only a Pentium 2, 1.2 gig clock and 256 megabytes onboard memory.
My limited income limits me to using a dialup ISP ((tdisp.com - best on the net - 300 hrs. a month for $12.00 - no blatant advertizing, irritating pop-ups, etc... no frills, but great coverage - six dialup numbers in my rural area - compared to only 1 number for all other discount ISP's serving the Athens, TX area)).... anyway, Avast4 runs great on my system! Updates (even using dialup) are automatic and usually less than two minutes each (accomplished in the background - allowing me to continue browsing, downloading, etc..
It's obvious to this inexperienced user that your problem must lie in a conflict being caused by another program on your system. Either that or you may have been infected with a virus or worm before you installed Avast.
Avast has identified at least four (that I remember) attempts by websites (I won't mention by name) to infect me with a rootkit(?) virus/worm/trojan (I don't know the difference), and has blocked every one!
For a free antivirus program - How could anyone ask for anything more efficient?
u should check the task manager again because my avast didnt give me any problem even i have installed a lot of things inside my PC.
Processor Intel Core Duo T2350
(1.86 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache)
Memory(RAM):1028MB
operating system: WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM
I agree with you, avast is not too big. I have been using it since it's conception and have saved over 100 computers from viruses that Norton, McAfee and yes, hard to believe, AVG missed.
However, back to the real problem, processes running. First and formost run a Hijack this(can be found at majorgeeks.com) and post it at www.majorgeeks.com. There are many pros there that will assist you with your running processes. DO NOT delete any processes until you know what they refer to! Also, try Spybot Search and Destroy to look at your HKLM's that are running as well as your BHO's etc. Read the tutorial at Spybot as they include an auto backup of your Hkeys etc. prior to deleting things that you do not want to run.
Once you get your processes running correctly, you will see that Avast does not have anything to do with your slowing down your system. In fact, AVG will hold up your system when updating if you are on dial up. I've been paid highly for that little issue since I have to wait until it's done before I can run anything else. Of course I'm talking about dial-up and any computer with less than a GB of RAM.
By the way, I have several 128mg RAMs I'd like to get rid of. Maybe even DONATE them to someone who may need them....
I have to agree that Avast is an excellent free program which I've used for a year. Before I used, Norton anti virus (yuk) and AVG free (good). Avast is best but please read the help file, that what it's there for.
Wow....I didn't mean to rock the boat here. I was only asking a question which I had hoped I placed in the right forum.
I wasn't giving an Avast review.
You people are way too defensive.
Do you own stock in Avast or something?
I'm simply trying to figure out one thing at a time why my machine gets bogged down.
I'm no tech and neither are my grandma peers. I sure can't ask them.
But I have always kept mine clean, updated and running smoothly.
In 5 years I've taken 'her' in for a checkup 3 times. They always say she's clean.
But the last time, last summer, the tech said he did a reinstall just for the sake of it. 'She' came home empty! So the McAfee that had come with her was gone.
I took her back and he replaced alot of 'stuff' that I was not familar with, Avast being one of them. AND I have noticed that it runs more 'stuff' than McAfee did on my task manager.
Someone was astute enough to notice I was refering to Processes and memory usuage.
As someone pointed out, I thought I had at least given enough 'clues'. I was not witholding information:) Just not savvy enough to give out much.
In popping up task manager from my task bar there are 4 Avast processes running this morn.
ashServ.exe - 16,712K - setting high
aswUpdServ.exe - 220K - setting normal
ashWebSv.exe - 46,680K - normal
ashMaiSv.exe - 1,656K - normal
Even amid all this hostility I have gathered that it is not my Avast that is hindering me so I thank you for all your help and intimidation.
At this point I'm almost wondering if it isn't my local ISP.
P.S. Charles Dickens>Bleak House>Esther Summerson:)
On the contrary,I don't think I was the least bit offensive or derogatory.I enjoy helping people and any time you wish, day or night, you can contact me directly for assistance.First,Ram sticks are placed in computers in pairs,if you have 32 Mgs of Ram,then you have twin 16's,1024mgs,twin 512 mgs Ram,unless yours is supremely different, you can't have 1280 Mgs of Ram,the 1024 of Ram is actually only 1,000 mgs techically. If your only running 128 Mgs of Ram,then it is pretty tough running much of anything, especially Windows XP which pretty much needs that amount of Ram to run at all,In that case, pick up a couple 512's and install them right where your 128 is now, side by side in the two slots, best not do it yourself lest you cause an electrical short, have a tech shop do it and your trouble will go away--IF--that's your only problem, not enough Random Access Memory.128 mgs of Ram was enough for Win95/Win98 even but not XP.Ram sticks are pretty cheap. As I said before, bring up your main settings screen in Avast,"terminate" the Outlook/Exchange and the Internet Mail engines and only place the remaining 5 engines at "Normal",see if that helps any.Let me know, okay?.
I have read these posts in reference to your problem and it appears to me that you need some troubleshooting procedures and it looks to me like you have quite a few things to get started with. Please refer to the following and if you can follow them check off the results as you go along. Also keep in mind that these approaches could certainly lead to some additional checks.
My pc often gets bogged down and won't even load a page.
You say that it often gets bogged down.
1. When does this seem to happen most: maybe upon startup?
2. Do you know how many startup items are running when you do start up your computer?
3. You should have only a minimum amount of startup programs when you turn your computer on.
4. I also believe you should consider timing your security programs whatever they are to run at scheduled times on a daily or at least a monthly basis because if you don’t it’s possible they will all try to run at once including trying to update themselves at startup each time.
Your security programs say the pc is clean.
1. It sounds to me like you have a few security programs you use.
2. Do make sure the updates for each one are in order?
3. Maybe you could provide us with a list of what your security programs are?
4. You might not be up to date on each one and if they are trying to update themselves with or without success, the results can be confusing.
I check task manager and there are over 70,000k of various Avast apps running
Along with 40 from iexplore and 40 from explorer.
1. You mention over 70,000k of various Avast apps running: I don’t understand that 70,000k comes in under the Applications tab?
Do really mean the Memory Usage under the Processes tab?
1. I recommend you provide us with the CPU USAGE SUCH AS 5%, 25% at he bottom along with the highest amount for any individual process in the accompanying table; yes it will most likely fluctuate but provide the nominal amount.
Also I have helped friends of mine with similar issues on different processes and in some cases it was obvious that they were not allowing their computer to boot up properly.
As soon as the windows screen showed up they were already trying to access the internet, email and whatever else almost immediately while startup programs were still trying to come to completion.
Instead of waiting the full minute or 2 that was needed for everything to be ready, they were trying to use their computer within seconds.
As far as memory goes do you in fact have 1028MB? This is very important to know.
Okay before sending this I notice that you had McAfee before and now you are using Avast.
Maybe McAfee still has link involved. Check your startup programs and see if McAfee is still elsewhere in your computer. You can find that out be doing a search for McAfee.
I have seen remnants of programs (in this case it happens to be McAfee cause problems such as you are seeing).
I know this is quite a bit to go with but I believe it’s very possible to fix your problem. I would like to stress giving us the CPU USAGE SUCH AS 5%, 25% at he bottom along with the highest amount for any individual process in the accompanying table as mentioned above.
Please do not hesitate to post back as you have come this far. It might be even wise to start a new thread requesting troubleshooting help on the problem as you see it.
BTY I know what it's like to have to trudge through something like this as I've had to do it myself and in turn I have been able to help friends of mine.
Best of luck.
