No No NO!

by dannigirl2014 - 6/9/08 3:00 PM In reply to: My opinion on his problem... by GakunGak

THINK MAN!

70000K is only 70MB. That IS perfectly normal for a modern AV program.

You misunderstod, I think...

by GakunGak - 6/9/08 3:09 PM In reply to: No No NO! by dannigirl2014

LOL, I know that, but he said VARIOUS APPLICATIONS ARE RUNNING in an operating memory, 70000 instances, so that IS NOT normal. I, for example, under heavy load have around 120 processes maximum, but he has over 70K. To illustrate what I mean, press CTRL+ALT+DEL and go to processes, second tab. That is what I understod and it is not good.
I think we should wait for the author and he may clear this for us...

He does not say 70000 instances at all. READ IT AGAIN.
There is a "k" in there!

"I check task manager and there are over 70,000k of various Avast apps running. Along with 40 from iexplore and 40 from explorer."
Does he mean he has them in his RAM or HARD DISK?
I understood RAM as he checked TASK MANAGER....

70,000K of various Avast Apps ...

by Edward ODaniel - 6/9/08 8:51 PM In reply to: RE: by GakunGak

appears to be the combined total of in use RAM observed for the various AVAST modules. He didn't name them but Avast has 7 "On Access Protections that can be loaded in memory (Outlook/Exchange, P2P Shield, Standard Shield, Web Shield, Network Shield, Internet Mail, and Instant Messaging Shield) or disabled and each can be set for Normal, High, or a Custom "sensitivity". Anything loaded in memory uses RAM and 68 meg isn't that much and default settings do not use that much (more like 56 meg). RAM is there to be used and wasted if it isn't used.

Avast also checks for updates and definitions every few hours and that process also uses additional RAM.

In addition Avast offers VRDB ("Virus Recovery Database") stores information about the actual state of the files, doing it three versions back for each file. The database creation/maintenance is performed either when the computer is idle, or when the screen-saver is running (any screen-saver, not only the avast! one). Depending on how the user configures it this can consume additional RAM and can even affect performance or it can be disabled.

NOTHING in the post indicates and "Security Problem" or any problem with Avast - it indicates that the user hasn't familiarized themselves with the product. That is something you too should consider doing before insinuating there is any problem with Avast.

As I Type This, My Task Mgr Says.....

by tobeach - 6/9/08 10:02 PM In reply to: No No NO! by dannigirl2014

all 4 of my AVG AV 7.5 processes total LESS than 4,000. This is normal background & mail guarding etc. but NOT with full scan running in background. Those I start manually. For what it's worth!:-)

as far as that goes

by DADSGETNDOWN - 6/10/08 7:38 PM In reply to: My opinion on his problem... by GakunGak

There IS NOT ONE, that will be "good enough" in every situation.
USE AVAST!

I agree with roddy32

There is no way Avast should be causing issues with that rig... Avast is fairly lightweight as far as Antivirus software goes. It does have many processes, but they are not heavy at all... My nearly identical machine running XP pro does fine with Avast. In fact, I have less RAM than you do. Checking elsewhere would be my suggestion.

It is causing problems....

by GakunGak - 6/9/08 3:17 PM In reply to: I agree with roddy32 by darth eletius

He said he checked TASK MANAGER and saw he has over 70K Processes...
Not files on his hard drive, but processes. Something that eats your RAM and say that each process is 1500KB, that would be 1500*70000=10500000KB, or 105000000/1024=102539.0625MB, or 100GB... That's too much even for a hard drive... :-|
Wait, that is impossible for RAM, maybe with virtual memory, but still... Something is not right, his question or me...

It's quite clear!

READ IT AGAIN SLOWLY.

I did, especially second and third sentence, and I still understand it as he has background processes of Avast and other ones in his operating memory...

I GIVE UP

by dannigirl2014 - 6/9/08 3:56 PM In reply to: RE1: by GakunGak

Look... If he did have 70000 processes how on earth do you thing he'd have any idea how many of them there were??

It's quite clear that 70,000k must mean 70MB.

HOW COULD IT MEAN ANYTHING ELSE???

Take a look at task manager and you'll see process sizes are in Ks.

THE CLUES ARE ALL THERE.

u'r right...

by GakunGak - 6/9/08 4:03 PM In reply to: I GIVE UP by dannigirl2014

I did, you are right... I guess I learned something new...
If that is the case, then I guess no worries for him....

Entertaiment value 10/10

by meini - 6/9/08 4:09 PM In reply to: Avast too large for my pc? by esthersummerson

This is such a hilarious thread. First you guys get right into giving the best advice - "do this, do that, mine is the best...". Than you get onto each other about who interpreted esthersummerson's post properly. What fun this has been to read - real entertaining. The fist reply to the author should have been "please explain what you mean by 70,000k"... everything else that has been said was just plain amusement.

These things happen in life over an over again. Here is my advice:
Learn to observe, ask the right questions, and think before you type/speak!

Nice observation...

by glenn30 - 6/9/08 4:53 PM In reply to: Entertaiment value 10/10 by meini

which leads me to observe and wonder how some replies conclude the author of the post is a "he"... may be... just wondering as I see no reference to gender in "its" post. :D

Ohhh well... now that is off my chest. ;)
