My pc often gets bogged down and won't even load a page. I check task manager and there are over 70,000k of various Avast apps running. Along with 40 from iexplore and 40 from explorer.
All my security programs say the pc is clean but it is small so I'm wondering if Avast is too large for it?
My thanks for any ideas.
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Processor Speed 2.34 GHz
Memory (RAM) 1280 MB
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Operating System Version 5.1.2600
Why not switch to a product that doesn't do this? AVG works nicely!
AVG eats WAY more resources than AVAST!.
I have used both AVG Free, and AVAST! Home.
Although Both are good, and I which AVG would revert back the 2 years
ago quality,
AVAST! is now my choice for obvious reasons, and has been for 2 years,
I have it installed on 3 computers now.
My main computer is, a OLD OLD, Pentium (3)550 MHZ, WINXP HOME SP2,
384 MB PC 100,
Right now I have 10 IE windows open and 1 folder.
SUGGESTIONS.
Post in the AVAST! forums they seem very good at replies and reply times if you have any questions anout AVAST! or need help with Virii
or anything else.
Get "Hijackthis" Frome trendmicro or here on CNET, and go to a Hijack
this forum like, spywareinfo dot com, there are others.
My PC Old/ P3 Title RAM min 512 Avast WONDERFUL RUNNING processor clock Avast non critical/ hard disc mass storage BIOS/Avast registration/
that is causing your problems. That computer should have NO problem whatsoever handling that.
70,000k ??? ***?
His post has got to be a prank.
Missing "?" or other indication of sarcasm on first sentence?

Perhaps he meant 128MB rather than 1280MB?
AlWIL are a fantastic team of people, who have gone to great lengths to provide (FREE OF CHARGE) an Anti-Virus program, which is second to none! There is NO OTHER FREE AV program that provides the same thorough coverage as AVAST does, not even those mentioned in this thread.
The millions of end-users that have AVAST on their computers, do not have any problems with it, IF, they read the ?Help documentation that comes with it.
Anyone who tries to operate anything for the first time, without reading the operating instructions, tend to wind up with problems.
Esther, there is nothing wrong with your AVAST that a little familiarity with its documentation won't resolve.
I've been running Avast for over a year & the paid version with no problems. Make sure it's not running a full scan when you just boot-up. My system is a little faster than yours with 2 Gig of ram & never had a problem. Make sure you have NO spyware. Good Luck P.S. AVG Free is very good also.
THAT IS A VERY SERIOUS SECURITY THREAT!
Avast should have few modules loaded in RAM, but what you described is an infected system. I STRONGLY recommend that you download Kaspersky Internet Security 2008 (released) as it can install itself on infected system, do a scan with maximum settings [update while installing, don't just go next next next...] and clean everything that he rates as dangerous! I have tested that brilliant product and is so lighter than version Kaspersky 7, more likely as ESET NOD32.
Do what I told you and report back what are the results...
I began using Avast after experiencing problems with AVG 8.0. When earlier using AVG 7.5 I apparently had no difficulty installing that av in an infected system. My computer began to run slowly after installing and then uninstalling AVG 8.0. The slow operation has continued following the installation of Avast. After cleaning out spyware that showed up after running Spybot S+D and Adaware I tried System Restore. I found that System Restore can't be used if a new av has been installed on an infected system. I would prefer a free av but inasmuch as I can't remove the Trojan Horse Backdoor Agent responsible for this mess, maybe Kaspersky Internet Security 2008 is the only viable alternative.
Probably a poor/ partial uninstall of AVG.
Get "Hijackthis" and go to a "hijackthis" spyware forum like
spywareinfo dot com, there are others too.
I am running same on all three of my computers on my network, with no problems whatsoever! AVG caused too many false positives, and now that they have updated to version 8, it is worse! I love Avast!!!
I find it tough to believe any of what your saying as far as Avast goes.Far as your CPU as well, this isn't a small unit by any means.
I have the same system as you but a tad less memory but--have had Avast AV since it first came out in a beta type form, years ago, never once any problems with it and wouldn't take it off if I was promised a new high-end Computer for free.
I'm also not one to criticize either, don't recall ever doing so on this forum or any other.Something may definitely be wrong with your system but it certainly has nothing to do with Avast.
Avast has 7 different engines at work, have you brought up the settings screen and made sure you haven't got these engines set at HIGH?,this will slow things down, make it harder for you to get some things. The NORMAL setting is plenty. Also, you can shut down both the Outlook/Exchange and Internet mail engines as they won't allow some computers to send and recieve.I only run 5 of 7 engines in mine.Depends on the type of email client you are using. You need to look deeper, include more info as your system is more than capable of handling the Avast.
This is what he said:
"I check task manager and there are over 70,000k of various Avast apps running. Along with 40 from iexplore and 40 from explorer."
That is not normal. You can use avast on high settings, no problems.
Something is wrong with the system itself, possibly infected and affected avast as well. If Kaspersky and/or Avira point out that the system is clean, maybe he should ensure that he has the latest updates and patches, in worst case scenario, reinstall...Avast is good, but sometimes not good enough...
