Sony viao lost cd drive

My daughter's laptop appears to have lost the cd/dvd drive. It doesn't show up under my computer and when you put a cd in it nothing happens it doesn't read it. It spins and lights light up but that's it. This computer is only 8 months old. Any clues to what it might be? It's running Vista, intel dual core, 160 gig hard drive. I have an extended warranty on it but will be a pain since Compusa no longer has a local store. Would have to be shipped. I see the beginning of a nightmare but if something minor will get my computer guy to look at it. TIA
