One out of two

One out of two is easy. To take a screenshot of your desktop, just press the print screen button on your keyboard, then open up a program such as Paint, and either press Ctrl-V or go to Edit --> Paste.

For getting a screenshot of a game while you're playing it... That's a little more difficult. You'll probably want to look for some specialty software for this sort of thing, because games draw things on the screen in a whole different way than the rest of Windows, so you can't rely on the print screen trick working.

Get ImageShack Quickshot. It is free to download and has a special gaming mode, so you don't get interrupted while playing.
