HDMI - No Audio Through External Speakers

by medietri - 5/10/08 6:21 AM

Just got a new HD Cable box/DVR (Pace TDC778X) connected to my HD TV via HDMI and I only get audio through the TV speakers, not through my surround sound external speakers which are connected to the TV via RCA cables. I tried an optical audio cable between the cable box and the TV, still no luck.

If I connect the cable box to the TV using SVideo and RCS audio cables, sound does come through the external speakers, but the video is sub-par.

I also tried connecting using component video and I cannot get video.

I could connect my external speakers to the cable box, but that is a pain since I will lose the external speakers when watching a DVD...

Pretty frustrated...any help greatle appreciated!

a few thing need to know

What tv do you have & what receiver do you have or if I am reading this right your using the audio out of the TV & probly using powered computer speakers!?!?!!?!?

Most TV's need to be told to send the sound out to the audio out port, it would be under the TV menu of 'Speaker', 'Sound' or 'Audio' & look for 'Fixed', 'Speaker'(On/Off), 'Variable' or Speaker Out'.

Fixed would be TV speakers only
Variable would be both exteral & tv speakers
Speaker out would be only exteral speakers

For no component video, could be a bad cable, you have the wrong input selected, colors are mixed up?!?

TV is an LG 30FSD4

Correct, I am using powered computer speakers connected to audio out of the TV. The speakers work perfectly well with the TV without the cable box as well as with a DVD player connected to the TV and also works when I connect my cable box to the TV via SVideo and RCA audio cables. So, the speakers do work fine with the TV, just not with HDMI. I have searched the TV's settings menu and have found nothing that makes them work as well.

Not sure what is up with the component video, had the cable comapny out to switch the cables and check it out and they had no idea either.

Thanks for the help anyway.

i'm having the same exact problem. powered PC speakers hooked up to TV. speakers play great when connected to a PC, but no sound when they are hooked up to a TV (i had them hooked up to the headphone jack of the TV previously).

as a workaround, i bought alot of adapters and hooked up my playstation 3 to the external speakers, but doing that i lose 2 things: 1 the ability to control volume from my tv, and 2. the ability to get audio from any other source (like cable tv). any pointers?

Hmm

So no sound if you do: HDMI to HDTV, then optical audio from TV Output to Powered Speakers?

I have mine set up like that except I run the optical audio cable to a receiver and not powered speakers.

not quite

my powered PC speakers don't have an optical connection - only the standard stereo plug that plugs into the back of a PC. is this the problem?

depends

On the back of your TV, does it have stereo (RCA) outputs?

yeah

by regulator - 6/4/08 11:33 AM In reply to: depends by bevillan

yep, my current setup is:

HDTV (Olevia 23" 1080i) hooked up to Playstation 3 through HDMI;
the back of my tv also has:

headphone jack
digital audio (the square one)
RCA (R/Y/W)

component, s video (not related to the discussion i believe).

i want to play the PS3 audio through the PC speakers , but the PC speakers only have the standard PC plug (1/8" stereo) that would plug into the back of a PC

so is there any chance of setting it up so that all tv sound comes out of the pc speakers?

Well if your TV has a headphones jack and the jack is functional (works with a pair of headphones), you should be able to connect a 1/8" Male to Male cable from your TV to speakers and have it work fine.

Double check to see if a pair of headphones can work with that 1/8" jack first.

You might want to try to look in the TV Menu options to see if you need to turn off your TV speakers or enable the headphones jack somehow.

thanks for the tip.. i missed it the first time i was trying to set it up, but there was an option to "turn off external speakers". i think i looked over it because i figured it would just mute the sound, but when i selected that option and plugged the speakers into the headphone jack, everything worked as it should! many thanks again for saving me more headaches
