I just bought god of war in almost brand new condition from a pawn shop for cheap. I go home and pop the disc in. the screen says reading for a second then stops. i also here it spin a sec and stop like the reading text. i put in a different (frequently used) game and it worked. So, i checked online and some other people have the problem of not being able to run any games on ther ps2 and the solution was to clean the lens. A while back i may have touched that lens, but i never saw a problem until now. any ideas on how i can make the game work. The disc i popped in to test was basically in the same condition.
Sometimes they get small scratches in the wrong place. You can try cleaning it, I've done it before its fairly simple.

My advice is take it back if you still can.
You have a "new" model PS3. It will not play that game.
The first PS3s that were released had full backwards compatibility because they had both a PS3 AND a PS2 processor in them so they play all PS1 and PS2 games. The new models that they are sending out are cheaper because they ONLY have the PS3 processor in it, and so it has to use software emulation to pretend that it is a PS2 in order to run PS2 games. This makes the price lower, but it also means that a few games just will not play nice with the software emulation and won't run. Unfortunately, the God Of War game engine is one of those that just won't work right with it.
Does your PS3 have the hard disk?
