If you have System 9.1 then all of this is not for you

now what? I know there's something I could do for this.
Start the computer and immediately hold down either of the Shift keys until you see Extensions Off. That should get you in. Then you can disable the multiusers extension in Extensions Manager.
with the extensions off, you should be able to get in.
However, if the password is being called from a third party piece of software, your options may be limited and you may not be able to get past the password screen.
The multiuser extension is part of the original OS.
Let us know how you get on

I have an OS 9, G4 Power PC, 350 MHZ. The gray body. I bought it in 2000, but have not used it for several years. When I turned it on today the Log In window popped-up and asking for my password. What should I do to by-pass this window so that I can change the password. Will turning off the Extensions solve this by pressing down the apple + shift keys? Will the suggestion of Apta Good work for my pc? Please help!! I actually just sold this computer and I'm helping the buyer figure this out. Thanks in advance!!!
for you.
You are running System 9 and he was running OS X.
You could start the machine with the shift key, NOT the Apple + Shift, held down to start with extensions off.
Once booted, go to the extensions control panel and move any extensions dealing with multiple account/logons to the disabled extensions folder.
I don't remember exactly what the correct names of the extensions are, it's been 7 years since I used System 9 for anything.
All the above presupposes that you did not have a third party piece of software to lock it down.
If that is the case, then a Clean Install using System 9.x.x CD will be the way to go.
I can't help wondering if the person who purchased this realizes that although this machine is a Mac, it bears no relationship to what Apple is doing now. This machine will have problems surfing the internet with any degree of satisfaction. The browser, Internet Explorer 5.x, is so out of date that it cannot render a large number of current websites.

I have the Software Restore CD and the Software Install CD. Which do I use to solve this problem. The instruction on the CD says "To start up from this CD, hold down the C key as the computer starts up." This is what I'll do right and not the shift key like you said earlier? Thanks!
If you use the Restore CD, hold down the "C" key when starting up.
Once booted, step the the procedure and try to do a Restore in Place. This is a clean install which will just replace the System and leave the data alone.
However, you may want to consider a Format and Install. THis will wipe out the drive and install everything so that the machine would be "fresh from the factory"
Bear in mind that it will need updating as soon as possible after that.
