I built my latest system in april '07 after reading up on the system req's for vista. after researching ALL the major component Mfgr's sites and creating a component list (pro's and cons) I decided on a set of components that would run xp (at the time) and easily handle Vista and high end gaming in June 07.
Only thing I had a hitch with was Creative Labs drivers which tool till october before being bug free.
I get a 5.5 on the experience rating. Very happy with the performance
Despite whatever you hear, Vista just works. Installation is flawless, most forms of media play right "out of the box", and all drivers work for me.
I've yet to run into any of the so-called DRM schemes in fact every file I've used opens with no problems. The DRM "problem" that people are griping about concerns Hi-Def media disks and their players (Blu Ray, HD DVD), the restriction here is that you have to have the right equipment to get the maxium quality; sounds resonable to me!
The driver issues with Vista have been largely resolved so thats no longer a problem. I would like to remind you that it is NOT Microsoft's responsibilty to make sure a third party makes drivers for their own products. PO'ed that your HP printer doesn't have Vista drivers? Blame HP, they make the printer and its up to them to make sure that they make drivers available or risk losing customers.
Vista has gotten a bad rap it is superior to XP, more secure and easier to work with. People should read not only the negative reviews bu the positive ones as well, get a balanced of the OS.
I purchased a HP laptop with Vista Premium, 2 Gigs of ram, a Core 2 Duo processor (1.83 Ghz), and a dedicated Nvidia 7600 Go with 256 Meg of memory. It was a great running system. Notice I said WAS.
One day Vista decided it could no longer update itself. Nor could it update the news widget. Nor could it update the Media Center program guide. Nor could it download CD information when using Media Player. And on, and on, and on, and on.... I think you get the point.
I have never had Windows XP simply stop updating unless there was a software install glitch of some type. Windows Vista stopped working without any discernible reason, but Windows XP never did. I currently have a $1400 paperweight. Worthless! I wish that I could have purchased my laptop with XP.
Sounds like you have the Vista virus, you might want to download Ubuntu and apply the fix.
Mine will not update any longer either. I thought it had somehting to do with the Linksys or something. Does Microsoft have a fix for this?
I own Vista and currently have no problems with it.For vista i dont have issue and ppl who say it is bad just upgrade thier PC to vista's requirement and see the difference.
Have had nothing but trouble.
1) Over 100 updates in 6 months - great program
2) Lost e-mail folders
3) Sudden crashes
4) Can't sign in
The list goes on. I think if enough people are having problems with Vista, some smart lawyer should instigate a class action lawsuit.
Tech Support a REALLY bad joke. 6 times on chat & each time made either new problem with solutions they offered
or never made a difference Even G.M.won't use this platform. TERRIBLE!
I am totally at a loss as to how you could possibly have so many downloads and that you experienced so many obstacles in using Vista.
Personally, as already stated in earlier comments, I find Vista a great operating system. It has been downloaded on my computer now more than 6 months ago, and it functions extremely well. I do have 4GB ram, as I realized from the start that the OS uses up far more resources than XP. I also changed both my motherboasrd and video card; my index performance reads: 5. All my present programs have been either updated or changed with new drivers from the respective manufacturers. The OS runs very stable, without any annoying crashes which I experienced in earlier operating systems. If you still own the CD with the XP OS, why don't you simply uninstall Vista and re-install XP, although I would consider that a step back to the year 2000!
First question- do you work for MSN, possibly in India? You sound just like 1 of the 6 Tech Support types I have been speaking to.
Just today 3 problems 2 with the visual & 1 with Windows shutting down with no apparent reason.
In the automated "look for possible solutions" it asks for more info, & when it's finished transmitting, it says I must be connected to the internet, WHEN I ALREADY AM!!
I also installed 2 gigs from the 1 my laptop came with.
My son is a research scientist & will not use Vista & check out Business Week as General Motors won't have anything to do with the VERY unstable Vista platform.
If you really don't work for MSN, & your computer works well thank your good luck!!!
Sorry if I sound bitter, but the last 6 months with Vista (came with my HP laptop) has made me that way.
APPLE NEXT TIME FOR ME!!!!
You answered your own question and solved your own problem. I just can't understand why all the Apple people are jumping on this thread to pan Microsoft. If you like Apple, get an Apple! I have used them and found them to be good computers. However, they do not have and probably will never have the support which "PC's" enjoy.
When I switched to Vista (on my 'home brew' machine) I noted the requirements and upgraded my hardware. No problem -- been running fine and I'm only a 3.5 on the Microsoft happiness meter.
If you're marginal on the hardware front, you'll be marginal on the performance front.
I don't own an Apple, nor do I work for them. I'm retired.
I own a HP Laptop.
I can assure you though, based on one of my sons who does own an Apple - it will be my next computer.
No 101 updates in 6 months, no having to put up with so called Tech Support people who are like pre programed robots. They don't have an original idea between them. They read off some prepared sheets, and if it's any different problem, forget it..
I guess the old addage you get what you paid for is right on with MSN.
Before this Vista I had a regular home computer with XP & never had a problem. They should have spent more time perfecting this piece of junk.
My other son, a research
scientist won't allow Vista in his labs. And even General Motors won't touch the Vista platform (Business Week magazine).
So I guess I'm not the only one?
For those of you boosters working for MSN check out Business Week magazine, May 14 issue.
Even the VP of MSN says their having difficulties with Vista.
It will also give you some of the major corporations who won't touch this program. They won't even match their sales progression of 80%.
So much for this great "trouble free" platform.
Microsoft operating systems have tech support? News to me, an inveterate MS user since 8087 and MSDOS days.
I have Vista Ultimate loaded on Dell's best business desktop with quad chipset (intel) 500GB hard drive and 8GB RAM. I have Dell's choice of monitor, and a "super-fast" driver. I have 25 year's experience with all MS operating systems and many applications made by them and high quality third party makers.
Only MSDOS really worked better than I thought it would. I have three Dell desktops; two with XP SP3, one with Vista Ultimate SP1. XP still out-performs Vista. Yes, I keep the disks defraged, the bugs at bay as well as a dedicated piece of hardware can do; I am aware of the needs of clean-running computers.
You would have to call me a PC kind of guy. Vista is very slow loading, slower yet shutting down, and Photoshop is like watching my beard grow. MS Word 2007 is pretty good. WordPerfect is okay when it does not crash.
I bought an Apple iMac running also intel Duo extreme, 500 GB HD; 4 GB RAM, whatever screen driver they have (no where near as fast as the driver on my Dells). MacOS 10.5 (Leopard) loads in a flash, runs all my software (except Corel) fast, clean, and utterly trouble-free. I am not a Mac guy. I am sick to tears with the PC vs Mac hype. But I have placed an order for four more iMacs, and two PowerMacs to run my business office and design center.
I WANT Vista to work as advertised. I don't want to change platforms. but MS tech support, if one can call it that, is useless helping me with my way too many problems for an operating system in its what? seventh generation? I have paid full price for 25 years of R&D and I feel like a blind and slow learning consumer of MS operating systems.
I am happy for all those who report no problems. I truly am. But I am not one of them.

My daughter has Vista on a fairly hefty laptop (dual core, 3 gig memory, medium hard disk, nice screen) and she has NO problems with it. I think that half the folks griping about Vista have not got enough horsepower to run it and the other half don't like it because it doesn't look like the "old" Windows.
I don't like huge operating systems, but Vista is no more of a pig (or only incrementally more) than Windows. It is a system for folks who are not geeks and so XP geeks will probably not like it.
I'm not an expert, just get by with computers!
My son doubled the capacity of my HP laptop, thinking it would improve performance.
So far in 6 months - over 100 updates, does NOT say much about this Vista program! Certainly to an old retired businessman, it would seem it wasn't ready for market.
Add to that Business Week magazine (May 14) about the many problems with the platform, with the likes of General Motors & Alaska airlines refusing to use it, I can't be alone with the many problems I've encountered.
Can't download many of the updates, Windows crashing, Windows freezing up, Windows suddenly closing.
Then turning to MSN Online Chat, Support people took over my computer, & after "fixing" it, could not get into my e-mail accounts. Another time, they "fixed" it I could not operate some features.
I never had these problems with XP but HP says I can't go back to XP, so I'm considering selling this one & buying an Apple!
