Which is best? Samsung LN52A650 LCD or PN50A550 Plasma?

by teaster73 - 5/19/08 12:11 PM

The editors rank the LCD higher but continue to say the black levels are better on the plasma. So which is it with these two new for '08 models made by the same manufacturer? And if plasma is better, why is an LCD ranked the highest?

what are their prices? Have you seen the "81" series samsung lcd sets that use LEDs as their backlight? To me that's one of the best tvs out right now. I don't know what price range you're looking in though

go for the plasma

Plasma is clearly better than lcd, just that it got a bad rep. Don't believe in the myths about plasma. Don't believe in 120hz either about lcd. Do research and use your own judgment. Have an objective view and let your wallet direct you also...lol...Dueces

Plasma

Plasma has the best picture hands down, yes. But the realities are these: they are heavier, run hotter, consume more electricity, do not do well in well lit rooms, and still suffer burn. Burn in is mostly temporary.

Great idea in a cold basement to video.

If you are going by just this site...

the 650 and the PN550 are rated exactly the same at 8.0. So I don't know why you think that the Editors ranked it higher.

They did give the 650 the Editor's Choice Award for LCDs, but that obviously doesn't have any bearing on other TV technologies. It is also meaningless at this point because it is very early in the year and there are many LCDs yet to come. If they review any that are better than the 650, they will give that new LCD the Editor's Choice Award.

As far as comparing the two TVs, I personally would go with the PN550. I won't get into the pros and cons of LCD and Plasma, mainly because I've done it ad nauseum. The short story is that while they both have pros and cons, the plasmas pros tend to be more on the picture quality side, and LCD tends to be more on the maintenance side.

But the ultimate judge is you. See both in person. Adjust them out of the showroom Vivid/Dynamic settings (put them both into movie mode if you are not familiar with a proper quick calibration) and see which one you like. Try and get the salesperson to have them show the same feed.

Good luck

lcd vs. plasma

I have a 40" Samsung 1080P LCD but I've always thought that the plasma was better visually and have been leaning in that direction. Now with the improvements in technology on both sides I am looking for a current side by side comparison. I'll probably end up getting the plasma but I like the 4 hdmi ports and the novelty of the infolink are interesting.

Chances are, Sony may make a comeback in LCD over Samsung.

With the advent of the XBR8 with Tri-LED technology, with RGB, it'll be interesting to see Sony try and come back from their little predicament that they're in right now. Sources say, that may be THE LCD to own, for those can can cough up about $6 - 8000. However, it seems like even the Z Series from Sony looks rather promising for more affordable budgets, and may probably prove to be strong competition for Samsung. That's going to be interesting to see...
