AVG 8.0

by starsh - 5/19/08 5:47 PM In reply to: Avg 8.0 by Fish

Avg 8.0 is not as good as 7.0 or 7.5, it asked for permission to track where ever I go on the net, permission was denied but it followed me anyway, I asked help to resolve the problem but none came, so I removed it & replaced it. Also when installing it I was informed that any problems came up I could reinstall 7.5. but was unable to put it back, now I have Avast which is 100% better. Stan.

AVG Free 8.0

by chucknobucks - 5/20/08 10:01 AM In reply to: Avg 8.0 by Fish

Homebuilt gaming tower w/XP Pro SP2.
Zone Alarm Free, AVG Free, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, HistoryKill.

I've used AVG Free for 3 or 4 years now, so when 8.0 came out, I downloaded it, removed 7.5 to do a clean install of 8.0.

At first glance, this is a very much improved version. After I installed and updated 8.0, I did a full system scan and AVG 8.0 came up with 5 "direct threat" virus'. One was quarantined and the other 4 were deleted automatically. This is after recently running a scan with a fully updated version 7.5, which reported no problems. I also periodically run the free scans from Kaspersky and others which also reported no problems.

Also detected were 218 (gulp) "possibly dangerous" items, mostly Adware with various additional Downloaders, Trojans, Loggers, Hijackers & Tracking Cookies, all of which I deleted with no apparent negative effects.

Yes, so far, so good, but a couple of oddities: When updating, there is no active window or progress bar displayed. When the update is downloaded and installed, a small window pops up over the clock in the taskbar saying the update is complete and then quickly disappears!? So if you blink or walk away, you don't know if it is finished updating or not.

Also at various times at boot-up the AVG icon in the taskbar has a red dot with an exclamation point over it saying it can't connect with the server. I don't know if the A-V is active at this point or not. The only way to get rid of it is to go online and update. I'll have to see if there is a feature that can be turned off, like auto-update or something.

AVG 8.0

by peterhb17 - 5/20/08 11:45 AM In reply to: Avg 8.0 by Fish

I recently upgraded to AVG 8.0 and found that the installation trashed all my entries in spam white and blacklist so now I have to start again and the route to get to edit the lists is very tortuous, much more convoluted than 7.5. Black mark here
I find the interface a lot more fussy and more time consuming and if you try turning something off it complains indefinitely. I'm on a home network behind a hardware firewall so I don't really need any additional software for this, but foe peace of mind I have allowed AVG firewall.
Also, I've recently got an error with a disabled Link scanner which AVG have not offered a solution for yet save to search the FAQs which I have already done to no avail.
Overall, not too impressed with this issue. Maybe I should be looking for an alternative ?

Reinstall AVG8 w/o selecting link scanner

by blacksunshine1 - 7/3/08 8:50 AM In reply to: AVG 8.0 by peterhb17

I had this problem also and eventually just reinstalled avg8 and de-selected the linkscanner....everything else is installed and working fine!

I had tried

by TONI H - 7/3/08 9:05 AM In reply to: Reinstall AVG8 w/o selecting link scanner by blacksunshine1

disabling the link scanner and found the IEXPLORER.EXE issue to still be there, so I did as you suggested before I even saw your post about this....uninstall AVG 8.0 and reinstall without the link scanner, and still had the problem, so I just finally after many years of using AVG quite happily uninstalled it for good and installed AVAST instead. It's also free and has given me no problems....in fact the first scan I did with it actually found six items in old files on a spare harddrive that AVG had never discovered, including a few saved websites in my Favorites.

AVG8

by Bkess - 5/21/08 5:07 AM In reply to: Re; AVG 8.0 by ggand4

Have been a happy AVG for years and updated to Ver 8 last week. I've got several issues:
1. No longer any desktop indications that updates and scans are in process
2. Scan takes much longer - on 7.5 it was about an hour - now on 8 it's 2 1/2 hours!
3. Scan 'warnings' are not flagged so must go to history and look at scan details
4. When I found the warnings I was shocked to see it had recorded more than 24,000 (!) registry entries, all related to Internet Explorer/ActiveX/Compatability. Ran AdAware, Spybot and Reg Clean with no similar reports but decided to remove them anyway - took about an hour in batches of about 2000 each time. Scans now run clean but I've saved the 24000 in the virus vault for awhile to see if something comes up that needs them!

AVG 8 free edition and WARNINGS!!

by LAG - 6/2/08 7:57 PM In reply to: AVG8 by Bkess

I downloaded AVG 8 (on XP Pro) 2 weeks ago and it was running great. It found a virus and it wasn't until I sent that to the vault that I noticed all the warnings that had come up with my scans, and continue to do so......over 24,000 each time, whether they're old or new ones I have no idea. I have my advanced settings at 10% disc space and am set for 1000 entries, which I believe is what is suggested. I have been very slowly emptying my vault to make room for these 'warnings', but after 2 weeks of 24 thousand plus you can imagine how long it's taking. They are all active X and the ones I've deleted so far have caused no problems. My question....should I reset the 10% disc space (I have lots available) and/or raise the amount of entries to 25,000 if it even goes that high? Or should I just delete past scans with warnings? AVG sure doesn't tell you much about what to do with these warnings and I'm confused....Thanks!!

Do you have SpybotS&D and\or SpywareBlaster on your computer

AVG 8 and active x

by LAG - 6/2/08 8:23 PM In reply to: Do you have SpybotS&D and\or SpywareBlaster on your computer by Marianna Schmudlach Moderator

Yes I do have SpywareBlaster as well as Advanced Windowcare and have noticed that each day when I check them, there are unprotected items, which I'd never seen previous to installing AVG 8. I read the thread and see I'm not the only one with this problem and that AVG is going to make some changes?
In the meantime, what would you suggest I do with all these warnings, delete them? Should I get a virus, I wouldn't even be able to send it to the virus vault, it's always full of active X warnings. Thanks for your quick response.

AVG Warnings

by Tallstack - 6/3/08 6:17 AM In reply to: AVG 8 and active x by LAG

What I have found in regards to the warnings is most of mine are from sites that I have windows remember signin, like my homepage. I found for now till they fix it by unchecking scan cookies the warnings are gone.

Cookies

by LAG - 6/3/08 4:42 PM In reply to: AVG Warnings by Tallstack

Hmmmm.....my cookie scanner is and always was unchecked. I'm still not sure whether or not I should just delete all the warnings, since they're all active X?

Active X

If it was me I would leave them for now but review and remove any you don't need.
