I recently did a system repair after having problems with Windows starting up, and I need to re-install sp2 for programs such as iTunes to work. When I try running the update wizard, it gets to the 'collecting inventory' (I think that's what it's called) stage, and then stops with an "An Internal Error Occured" message. Below I posted the data from svcpack.log. If anybody could give me suggestions on what to do next, I would be very thankful for the help.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation = http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
I just did "Method 2" as described in the article, but to no avail. The install still halts on the "Performing inventory" step. Thanks, but any other suggestions? The log file did change slightly:

That, "I recently did a repair" problem may be a clue.
SP2 was a major upgrade to XP and when it was first issued it caught out many users because their systems were not "squeaky clean".
By that we mean
1] No viruses, spyware, adware, trojans, worms, etc.
2] No incompatible software/hardware, Microsoft guidance here.
3] Remove all temporary files, including files in any 'temp' folders and TIF, (Temporary Internet Files).
4] Check Disk and Defragment before installing.
5] Ensure the system is running smoothly and well with no issues.
6] Backup your 'can't afford to lose' data like photos, music, videos, documents, etc beforehand.
7] Remove all old System restore backup files, then create your own System Restore point before installing. The installation will do so anyway, but it is best to be sure.
Try that.
